Number of snails
How many snails should I have for my 125gal reef tank?

that all depends on how much food there is for them. start off slow and add more if needed so they don't starve. but i would say start off with around 50-75 of a good variety and go from there

only ten seems a little lite - altho if its holding up on the algae i guess your all set. if not, i agree , add a mix of a couple dozen more, see what happens, if you need more... bettr to add a littl at a time. you will need to add more eventually anyway. there always seems to be causalty's over time. in my 150 gal. i have like a 100, about 1/3 are hermits, the rest is a mix of snails.

You should strive to have a variety of snails that perform different functions. Look at turbos, ceriths, strombus, stomatella and nassarius. In my experience all will clean algae from glass and rocks except nassarius; they're more of an extra food/dead things clean up crew. Ceriths and nassarius will also work the sand bed.
I'm going to advocate for more of a conservative approach on the numbers, though. Turbos will grow rather large, so if you have loose corals or rocks they'll probably knock them out of place at some point. But they really clean up algae. Start with two and see what happens. Ceriths stay much smaller, as do strombus and stomatella. Start with 10 ceriths and maybe 10 each of the strombus and stomatella. Both the strombus and stomatella will reproduce prolifically, so you might be able to get away with fewer than that to start. I don't believe ceriths will breed in average reef tank conditions, but check me on that (and everything else for that matter - ). As for nassarius, start with two. I made the mistake of buying 8 for my 54 (because that's what the web sites and stores recommended), and they ended up snacking on my other snails. It's always easier to add more if you need to, unless you have a good LFS who will take them back in trade for something else. |

Snails
When we had hermit crabs in our tank they always seemed to be picking at things that we didn't want them to pick at. One of them ate my clown fish. So he was given to a orthodontist office in Cambell. As far as the snails cleaning the glass, all I ever got were a bunch of snail trails. I'm really not up on much of this stuff. So when you start throwing out names like Nassarius, Strombus and Strombatella it's really over my head. I'm just a dumb blonde. My husband takes care of the water changes and chemicals and testing. I clean the inside of the glass do the seascaping and feed.
Thanks again, Dawn |

I have about 30 turbo snails in my 120 tank. They keep my glass clean good. And there are a few of them that hangs out on the rock. At any given time there is about 15- 20 on the glass

Where your picture album is, you will notice 3 things under the picture. The third is the IMG code. Click that and cntrl + c to copy it. Paste it by cntrl + v in your thread and the pic is posted.
