Tunze vs.Koraliia

How much of a physical size difference is there between the Tunze 6045 nano-stream and a hydor Koralia 3?
I'm looking online, so I can't see them next to each other to see if the Tunze is worth the extra money. Any opinions?

I recently got both a Koralia 3 and a Tunze 6025. I can't compare the 6045, but here is my opinion on the two pumps.

Both a big improvement over the powerheads I was using. Nice wide flow. The Koralia 3 is about 30% bigger than the Tunze 6025. The Tunze in my opinion appears to be built better and has a much stronger magnet. The Koralia's magnet is quite sufficient though and both are a big improvement over suction cups. I think the Koralia 3 has a little more flow than the Tunze and was $20 cheaper. The tunze will also start backwards, but still gave good flow for my needs even running backwards. The Koralia may do the same, but I have not seen that.

If you're space constrained and don't mind the price, the Tunze is probably a little better. The Koralia is more economical and has a little stronger and wider flow for less money, but it's not as pretty.

Thank you very much, that is very helpful.

I was actually refering to the 6025, but wrote 6045 by mistake. For what it's worth w/ an easy 5 min. mod that cost nothing you can basically turn a 6025 into a 6045+ .

The 6025 is definitely smaller. I like mine.

I think the Koralia has a piece of plastic that will stop the impeller from spinning backward... thus is shoots out and makes a clanking sound.

Grunt007 - Can you explain the mod? I've never heard of it and I'm buying 2 6025s today that I would love to be able to mod into 6045s in the future.
Thanks

i would go with korallia nice wide flow pattern, and in my opinion better build quality than the Tunze. it is a little bigger but to me no big deal. Tunze has 4 little plastic pieces that clip it to the inside magnet. 3 of mine broke off allready so i had to glue it. for the price difference its a no brainer go with the korallia

^^That's the mod/thread I was referring to pezcubano. Seems effective and simple enough, and doesn't void the warranty.

I was getting a good deal on koralia's too, so the tunze 6025 ended up being like $17 more than a koralia 3... oh well. I like the fact that I can upgrade/mod the Tunze to put out ~1100 gph if needed for no more $$. My tank is smaller and crowded w/ larger SPS colonies, so the smaller size of the Tunze should be nice for me as well. We will see...

I've read both good and bad about both regarding noise... and just about everything else hehe. I know Tunze's may make some noise for the first couple days until the impellar "seats" itself(I'm not sure if Koralia are the same). After that, people don't seem to have many issues w/ noise from what I've read online.

You guys do realize you can mod the korallia just as easily as you can mod the Tunze, right?

IIRC, all you have to do is cut the shroud for the koralia mod. Somewhere in the 1600-1800 gph.

Really? I missed that thread. I probably would have gotten a koralia had I known that. Well looks like it's down to just a size advantage to the Tunze...

Thanks for the mod!!!
Looks like it works from the sound of the thread.
I'm going to try my 2 x 6025s in my 75G first and then see if I do indeed need more flow. If I do then I'll probably just step it up with 1 or 2 6045s. Im just scared of the sandstorm.
I'll let you know how the 6025s do. Should be coming in a few days.

No with Tunze nano you only need to cut a piece of plastic inside the shroud, with Koralia the mod is much more complicated, you need a MJ1200 magnet driver, an Octura prop, find a way to put them together, then trim back the Octura prop until the Koralia motor can drive the prop reliably. Additionally I thought only the Koralia 4 pumps can be modded, not K3 and below, but I could be wrong.

But if you are a little handy, should be able to do the Koralia 4 mod without difficulties.

^ Now that you describe it, I did see that, but did not think much of it b/c you needed additional pieces, money, work and time. I feel better again about getting the Tunze heh- thanks.

Jacmyoung it was your test in the nano-mod thread that convinced me to get one. Thanks for the effort and info.

I'm sorry, but I disagree with your "all you have to do".

Cutting the shroud on the Tunze and not damaging it is a lot tougher than the 30 seconds it takes to make a new prop.

kb-smoker... hard to find? Theyre for sale in my clubs local marketplace (used) almost daily.

hey guys,
I recently did the tunze nanostream mod on a 6045 and i must say that it was a smart move. This definitely improves the stream and it's strength and ability to push more water. I'm not sure how well the koralia pumps perform when modded, but I have seen the koralia 4 in a 55 gallon tank at a lfs and it's not very impressive. IMPO the maxijet mod puts out the most flow and power, but if I had to choose between the koralia and tunze nanostreams; I would go with the tunzes they are reputable and have some experience and knowledge with stream style pumps (turbelle pumps).

the nanostream mod is not difficult at all. If I can do it, anybody else can ... Do not worry about damaging the kidney shell. Although possessing a dremel would make this project a bit easier, but is not necessary.

Especially when we can get a 50 pc set at Costco for $20. I bought mine for the Tunze mod, then used it for my skimmer mod, now I have used it many times around my cars and house. The best $20 spent.

I am glad the info was useful for many. Dont forget the Tunze nano mod was the idea of a high schooler.

Rich I didnt think my Koralia 4 mod was that difficult, but have you done both? To say the Tunze mod is more or equally difficult, give me a break.
