You know, you can spend as much as you want to, on what ever gallonage system you want to discuss, but I think most of us here who have been doing this a while will agree, you can buy 20 "things" but only really need 3 or 4 "things" (if the little things are done right, mainly I'm speaking of water changes)
i'm speaking to the experienced reef keepers here, how much have we spent on stuff early on that we now don't need or use? Many here would be surprised at the life that can be supported with a minimal amount of (quality) light if tank depth is not too deep, and minimal amount of test equipment (zero) if water changes are done routinely, with a high quality mix, and water movement is well tweaked, and tank is stocked accordingly. Go ahead, rip me a new one, but I have to chuckle a little when I see some of the large dollars some have shelled out on 12 gallon systems ... systems I've bought, and stocked for fractions less, and have ran successful for 5 plus years. -Good PC light (not necessarily a lot if tank depth is shallow) -Good water movement -Regular, small water changes with quality mix -Dependable Small Heater, (only if ambient temps require it) -one or two timers -Smart stock, rock, and substrate selection (from quality sources as well) and absolute minimal feeding (this is the Core of a successful SW system, be it nano, pico, or whatever) -smart food selection (and stay with what works, no more than 2 varied selections) -Hydrometer (deep six) -RO/DI water for mix and top-off (wal-mart) -the ability to stay on top of keeping the system topped off (daily, and when you're away on vacation) -cooling fan (evaporative cooling has many benefits when you can achieve it and it's not too excessive) -Skimmer, No -Test kit (s), No -Additives, maybe yes to some to build coralline growth rapidly, early on, but generally No, otherwise If high tech is your thing, that's fine too. But if I had to sell attractive systems w/inverts and fish that started at $1000 stocked, I'd starve to death where I live. |

...hmm...
34g RSM and cabinet...roughly $ 900 Live rock 250 Sand and BIG bucket of salt 150 Buckets and hydrometre 30 API Test kit 40 Misc. food and calcium suppl that was on sale 60 ...so far, that's it...no livestock yet...but I don't want anything unusual or expensive, so I should be fine... It's still an awful lot of money!
