that wouldnt be very good, it would absorb the light and get very very hot. unless your looking for it as something other than a lid on the tank, like for barebottom or something.
but for on top of the tank, I wouldnt try that.

It is for a sump project I am repairing. The existing eggcrate is black, but is broken. I am trying to match it.

Hundred dollar minimum order...oh well. Thanks for the help. I Googled light diffusers and eggcrate, nothing I could use. Should have tried "plastics".
Thanks for the help

Thanks DarG.
areze: Have you used black eggcrate on a tank top before? I believe it would be fine. The surface area of eggcrate/light diffuser is negligible. The heat transfer from the diffuser material to the water would be low, if any, especially with any kind of air circulation. Some diffusers block more light then others. Some actually intensify the light. I believe the material, and its structure/shape would effect light transmission more than the color. However, without some data from a manufacturer, or independent tester, I would not state either as fact. If you have used black eggcrate, or know someone who has, please describe your experience(s). I do not want it for my tank top, but I am getting tired of the styrene white eggcrate turning yellow. Maybe I will try something different; if I can find acrylic white diffusers, they are supposed to resist yellowing, or use the black diffusers if I get some. Thanks.
