Need help with ID - Brown specs/flakes everywhere...

Hey everyone,

Need some help please. I have what apperas to be brown flakes/specs/eggs/larvae or something all over my tank. They appear overnight on my glass, and when I scrape them off the glass they fall to the sand bed where they stay.

They don't disappear like algae.. they stick around. In one corner I am now getting quite a bit of them.

If anyone knows what they are or how to get rid of them please let me know. I tried to take a photo, but my camera will not allow great macros on tiny objects, so this was the best I could get. Sorry in advance for poor quality.

Interesting, NG.... Do you think it's flatworms?

Look like flatworms to me, but the picture is kinda fuzzy.

Do a search on Flatworm Exit, it's a product made by Salifert.

They definitely look like flatworms. Did you recently add any corals?

I think she added a candycane and zoa colonly today. Perhaps a couple others in the recent past as well. NG, where are you?

Hmmm. Don't flatworms commonly hitchhike on zoa colonies?

Hey guys,

Sorry! Took an early night last night and wasn't around. Needed to catch up on sleep.

Yup! I think you guys are exactly right, Flatworms. Thanks!

I did add a new candycane, the zoas were older I've had them since Feb. I've not added anything new except for the candycane since around March I think.

But I've been having this problem for a long time. I noticed them in my old nano tank... so I'm pretty sure I know the source of where I got them. And yes, I think it did come in on zoas bc I started seeing them right after that.

I have a ton in my tank right now. I think I am going to try the sipon method to get rid of what I can see.

I'd rather not use the meds if I don't have too. I read on Marc's site that Target Mandarins and Six lines may eat them.

I have two clowns, a fire shrimp, and a purple fire shrimp that I would be worried about with the six line. Any thoughts?

Also, is a target mandarin different from a green one? As in would a green one also possibly eat the FW's or just a target?

Thanks a lot!

I would start with just siphoning out as many as you can first. If used properly, Flatworm Exit can yield positive results.

My six line did nothing for my flatworm outbreak. I've had them for 2-3 months now. If there are a lot, I don't think you will have much luck getting rid of them. I have not used flatworm exit yet. I don't think I will. I've heard that they will go away on their own so I'm waiting it out. I guess they will reach the end of their life cycle.

Increase flow. This will keep them from over populating.

Good Luck.
