So we can all learn from this...what exactly is happening in this type of situation? I've had my tank go "milky" from a kalk overdose, resulting in high pH and the precipitation of calcium carbonate, but for the most part that seems to be fairly harmless.

I think all the coral slime heavily, then the most vulnerable coral RTN. This puts a lot of organics in the water leading to a bacterial bloom. Once the bacterial bloom kicks in all but the toughest coral are goners, if they aren't already dead.

I too agree go after the contractor! My wife is self employed and has over a million dollars just on her self for liability!!! Again, so sorry for your loss but that dude should have known better than to move any plug close to that tank!!!! Pure negligence on his part!
Good luck!

You won't believe how poisonous the water became shortly after the crash. Both of my arms has super strong rash and remain super itching for 5 days after digging into the water, trying to safe some surviving corals.
At least I was able to save my giant clam, 2 big green millepora colony and a big yellow green staghorn with purple tip. I took the photo of the mess for some reason. Thanks for everyone's support. It is too early to think about giving up since the 1000GL tank is arriving next week. |

I am so sorry. Hopefully, you hired a licensed contractor. They should be bonded for at least a quarter of a million. Indonesia could be different, but I suspect not. In which case, you don't even deal with the contractor, just whoever they are bonded with. Check your paperwork.
One thing you might consider, as well as everyone else, would be to purchase a backup power supply. Get one strong enough for your needs and plug anything the tank would need to survive into it. They are a small investment in the long run. Many also have indicators (lights and sounds) telling you that they have switched to backup power. Spend $500 or lose thousands. Additionally, an automatic backup generator (properly hooked up!!!), is great investment for longer power outages. Once again, sorry to hear about your tragedy.

Oh, that sucks. I hope you at least gave it to the workers so at least they would realize to ask first before next time. Compensation wouldnt bring back the 4 years of coral memory you have. But hopefully they will be mended when the feel of a new tank going up comes in. Take lots of pics when you rebuild. We would love to see them. And of the new frag your wife is working on now.

Sorry to hear your loss.
I cried when my 90G tank crashed last year because of my fault, but I come back with vengeance and got myself a 375G tank.

My 1000GL's stand is arriving this Thursday. The filter is already set. After that the glass tank measurement can be taken for production. I should be able to have the tank up and running this month. At least I have 3 big colonies and a huge clam to go alone with the 1 - 2 years colonies in my 200GL to start with the big tank. I plan to empty out everything and keep just one big marine aquarium. I am converting the 500GL into fresh water planted tank this Thursday. The filter and circulation has been modified. |

Ok, I agree it sucks big time to crash a tank like that...but it's not like the tank exploded or anything--sounds like all the equipment is still in working order. The only things that were lost were sea life. I know this is a big enough deal for us reefing folk, but what would it really mean to the average Indonesian? Odds are even if you got some insurance money for the ordeal, it wouldn't be much. All they would pay for was the inhabitants, and I'm guessing corals are pennies on the dollar in Indonesia compared to here.
The real tradgedy here is the loss of coral life--and no amount of money will bring them back. |
