Question HQI UV shields?

for DE HQI bulbs, can any glass cover work, or do you need a special UV glass? if so, where can I get UV glass?

I think it needs to be UV shielded glass, like untinted car window glass. I'd try calling the ballast or bulb manufacturer to be sure.

You can get UV glass at your better picture frame stores like custom framing.

Old documents, diplomas, prized photos etc are usually custom framed under UV glass to prevent yellowing and aging from UV light.

I've not done it but is is not a good idea. The UV rays cause severe tissue damage similar to people getting a sunburn or skin cancer.

there is ambient radiation coming from those lamps that's invisible.

e.g., just because you're not looking into the bulb, doesn't mean you aren't being exposed to damaging radiation.

UV Shields are a must.

Don't do it without the glass unless they are bulbs like Elos that have built in UV shield. Read here!

also a good idea to get tempered uv glass. the high temps will crack regular glass. that little tidbit comes form personal experience

Yes i have run my de 150 's w/o the glass shield and corals do not take it very well. I had broken one of the original shields and left the light on thinking it would be ok while i went down to the glass shop to get a replacement, bad idea. the effects of the radiation go away but it closes them up for awhile.
