How often do you feed yours?

Just a question. How often do you feed your fish?

reeffreak2007 12/30/2007 08:21 PM

3 times a day,mostly anthias here.

thor32766 12/30/2007 08:28 PM

twice. once in the mourning and once in the evening. I am a tang facnatic.

ACBlinky 12/30/2007 08:45 PM

Once daily. The maroon pair (30g) gets Selcon-soaked flakes most of the time because that's what they like (Prime Reef or Formula One/Two), and the 90g gets blender mush, flakes, pellets, LFS frozen foods or a mixture of those, as well as a 4" x 4" sheet of nori or another seaweed is left on the clip for them to graze all day.

kenwendyb 12/30/2007 09:52 PM

I feel bad. I feed like every two days. Any other opinions out there?

toastii_reef 12/30/2007 10:35 PM

yea i do too- only cuz i only have 1 fish that eats mysis- and i normally defrost a whole block- once i switch him to flake or i get cyclopeeze i will feed him everyday- cuz i feel really awful

reefergeorge 12/30/2007 10:40 PM

I feed my active fish two times a day, and my puffer every other day.

jennibee13 12/30/2007 10:41 PM

every 3 days, nori on the off days, tangs , anthias , etc........let em pick the reef clean

llorence 12/30/2007 10:47 PM

Once every day or two.

coral rules 12/30/2007 10:49 PM

once in the morning and once at night

johnd4g 12/30/2007 10:57 PM

Every other day.

McTeague 12/30/2007 11:13 PM

Every other day and once a week I put a silverside or two in there for the starfish.

capn_hylinur 12/30/2007 11:20 PM

garlic soaked flake and mysis in the morning.

flake twice more in the day---not alot though

If you over feed and don't rinse frozen food off with r/0 water then you are increasing the phosphates and the nitrates in your tank--- then you are feeding nuisance algae :)

steve1963 12/30/2007 11:29 PM

Nori several times a day,something meaty,once.

sundancer 12/31/2007 01:27 AM

I feed 5 times a day in small amounts(what they can eat within 45 seconds) plus nori twice a day for whoever wants it. I work from home :celeb 1:

KyleO 12/31/2007 03:21 AM

Up to 3 times a day in my 210ga display, but fairly light each time. Nori once or twice a day.

Once a day in both my Nano and 65ga........

moo0o 12/31/2007 05:54 AM

reptilemanmark 12/31/2007 06:31 AM

I have an automatic feeder 2X/day otherwise I would be right there with you.

Its funny, the fish know when theyre going to get fed. A minute or so before the food dumps, they gather by the feeder.

LobsterOfJustice 12/31/2007 11:10 AM

I shoot for about 3 times daily. Sometimes less, sometimes more. Always between 1-5x. I have 14 fish (8 of them anthias) in my 90. They get frozen food when I'm there to feed, and an automatic feeder feeds when I'm not.

IMO--you should feel bad and you should question why you are in the reef hobby.
Sorry to be blunt here--but you go every two days or so without a meal and see how you feel.:eek2:

perhaps you should read this thread on fish health and feeding:

OK, alot of opinions out there. My fish have been healthy happy fish for years and my tank has been very healthy, uptil recent with a jump in phosphates which am currently treating, but really have never had any concerns. I feed every two days and vary between several different food types. I also feed corals twice a week and they are flourishing, as they always have. It is nice to see different opinions. Thanks for yours.

greenbean36191 01/01/2008 10:20 AM

I certainly don't feel bad at all for feeding my fish two or three times a week. Not giving a fish food for a day or two is nothing at all like not giving a person food for a day or two. Being warm blooded like a human is energetically expensive, which is why we have to eat so often. Being cold blooded like a fish is energetically cheap. As a general rule, cold blooded animals need to eat less. In the wild fish eat all day long, but in very small portions and the food varies in quality. Assuming you're using good quality food there's no reason most fish need to be fed daily and just like any other animal, fish can get overweight from too much food. Over the years I've seen quite a few examples. People don't realize how much more efficient fish are at converting food to body mass or energy than land animals are.

If you want to feed daily or multiple times a day then there's nothing wrong with that as long as you're feeding appropriate amounts. There's also nothing wrong with going a few days without feeding, again as long as you feed appropriate amounts.

What do I know though? I only used to study fish metabolism. ;)

zotzer 01/01/2008 11:36 AM

I feed once per day.

If one has a healthy reef, there is plenty of food that naturally occurs in there....algae, pods, sponges, etc.....

Just because one might feed his/her fish infrequently doesn't mean they are not eating and getting sustinence.

Tracy
