lighting storm coral polyps

here in Maine we have been getting some thunderstorms at night pretty bad. I have noticed before a thunderstorm arrives that all my SPS coral retract their polyps before the storm reaches me when its about 5 to 10 mins out. Is this a freak of nature?

Maybe they can sense the change/drop in pressure.

I think that atmospheric pressure has alot to do with PE. I have noticed this too... Fish seem to act differently as well.

Dogas are a really good source for this as well. My dogs can tell me a storm is coming before the sky turns black, which is normally a good half hour here. Thats also how you can tell the weather by birds. If there are a lot of birds sitting on wires, rain is more than likely coming. When low pressure moves in, the birds find it harder to fly. Animals are amazing in all aspects.

with the recent storms out here in colorado I've noticed a few things, my long tentacle plate is less inflated, my LTA has moved before a storm, moving back after, moving back before... ugh... all this moving....

And my coral banded shrimp has selected one corner of a tank through each storm that he's pretty much never seen in.

Odd indeed

Key word is adaptation.

It's evolution!

This is not an Evolution vs Creation Debate. Lets keep this thread clean and clear of that mess.

That wouldn't be surpassing. Many animals can sense environmental changes better than humans.

Im not debating. That is the last thing I want to do. To each be his own. Im just expressing the way I feel about things. That is the main reason why I got into reef aquaria. The beauty of it and it makes me remember where this all came from and that it will all disapper. I dont think talking about evolution vs creation is a mess. Its very interesting to see how other see things. And that statement doesnt make sense. Even evolutionist admit that they cant explain the first life on earth. Something we, including I should ponder on. Oh yea and dont forget HAPPY REEFING!!

And that we can agree on. Although, this statement to each of us, probably has a different meaning.

BACK ON TOPIC!

Anyway, this interesting "feature", for lack of a better word, that corals display under atmospheric phenomena is also evident if you turn up the stereo and jam out in front of your fish tank!... Anyone noticed that?... At party's they tend to not appreciate music the way humans do...

probably because the vibrations of the sound mimic thunder on the reef.

Great guys, juuuuust great! Storms were one of the few things that could pull me away from the tank in search of a better spot to sit and watch the lightning. Now, thanks to some people, I will remain at my tank to stare diligently at coral polyps...

On a side... Animals truly would show us so many things if we actually paid attention. You all know the minute percentage of our brains that we actually use right? Wonder what we used to use the rest for... hmmm...

I remember seeing a show on Shark Week a year or so ago where a researcher had tagged juvenile sharks that lived within a bay so that their daily travels could be tracked. They all left the area before an approaching storm hit; flat out disappeared. It would appear that some sea critters know that bad weather is rolling in....
