Important info re: BAR swap Feb '08 pls read!

New BAR frag swap eligibilty requirements!
In order to exchange coral in the upcoming, February '08 BAR swap, you must:

Be a BAR member in good standing as of 09/12/07 and at the time of the next swap

Attend 1 BAR General or BOD meeting between now and the February '08 BAR swap.

There will also be the usual requirement of at least 2 different propagated coral frags per participating member.

Thank You. -BAR Board of Directors

Can BAR make the remainder of this week as the deadline to be eligable for the Feb 08 swap? I wasn't aware of the deadline. I been meaning to join for the regional swap as well if work schedule permits.

Well, we've had retro-registration before so hopefully this didn't take you completely by surprise.

Is it the BAR's goal to limit membership as opposed to growing? Just curious...

Angry annd just as I was about to send in my member$hip

Hmm. Sign up six months early or else, and don't show at our swap without frags. This is a loud and clear "new commers/crash victims/ reef re-enrty/ newbies need not apply".
I suspect that is not the message you meant to send.

It was more than enough to scare (rhymes with BARE) me off.

This is the first I've heard of the deadline today that the deadline was yesterday. Was this posted prior to this thread?

Frag swap planning and other club issues are among the ongoing behind-the-scenes work of the BAR BOD.

There was a 5 hour BOD meeting this past weekend where we arrived at a consensus on numerous club issues, including the new eligibility prerequisites.

This thread and the one on the BAReefers forum announce the eligibility requirements.

Sorry you took it this way. I believe if you ask any current BAR member how they feel about this community, they will tell you that it is very generous with both advice and coral to all its members, newbies included. The BAR BOD does not feel that swaps should be an opportunity to quickly stock an empty tank with free coral, whether you're new to the hobby or not. And BAR membership offers much more than just swaps. I believe our responsibility to the corals and the BAR community is the message we're focusing on here. -Jim

Swaps do not work unless people show up with frags

As I said- I don't think BAR intended to convey that message. So I'm sending off my membership fees anyway, for the same reason I subscribe to public radio-guilt (and because membership gives me the right to moan and groan about BOD decisions) However, I know of several former empty tank newbies who showed up empty handed at BAR swaps years ago, received geneous donations, grew out those frags and in turn gave frags to me ( who is always to busy for swaps), and I in turn sent frags on.... Perhaps times have changed since I've been, er... "away" ( cough cough)

Membership gives you the right to attend BOD meetings and become informed about the issues and to help in the decision making process!

I assume by your statement that the only reason you'd join BAR is for some free frags, right?

I don't have any negative things to say but was just curious on the deadline. I never been to a frag swap but would like to attend one some day to see what its like if my schedule ever permits. I've met many BAR members and you all are a cool crowd!

Mike,

The last several frag swaps(and other club events) have had membership deadlines for participation. You can still attend as a member even if you are not actually swapping.

To get an idea about what the swaps are like, read through this thread regarding the last one:

http://www.bareefers.org/discussion/...p?topic=2141.0

All of our feedback was that this was the best swap ever

Wait, but you posted the membership deadline the day after the deadline, was that an error?

agree there need to be a deadline, the sooner the better. but i think it's a little much to give the dead line the day after it had happened. especially since i thought the deadline was originally in Nov.

having said that there really is no excuse for not being in this club if you live in the bay area. it is the BEST investment i have made on my reef. period!

Nope, posted it on the 12th, same as this one.

Don't know why RC says it was the 13th.

Question on membership, membership is for one year. Is that one year from signing up or calendar year?
