Closed loop is exactly as it sounds, its a loop that's closed!

Basically though it takes water from the tank, directly from a hole, through a pump and squirts it back into the tank, often through multiple outlets, sometimes with an alternating current device such as an oceansmotion.

The benefits is that this water doesn't go to the sump, as such you don't have to fight against a head pressure, and lose velocity. It's basically another way to get movement inside of a tank without putting powerheads in the tank

I have several closed loops the pumps of which are at floor level, and there is a definite loss of velocity and flow.

Taking piping out of the equation, then there should practically be zero head loss. The amount of pressure solely from the water column at the intake will be identical to that of the output side so no need for the pump to work the water up back in the tank. When you turn off your CL pump water does not rush down because there is no pressure acting on the output of the pump, unlike your return where water will start careening down and exit from the intake.
