Formalin/Kanacyn Question

Can the two of these be used together? Do either one hurt the biological filter? If so which one? TIA

Both will affect the biological filter. Do not use either in your main tank.

What condition are you treating?

Question is not me, but a friend. She has a puffer with ick in a large 120 gallon tank with several other fish. She has been using formalin to treat the ick on the puffer. She was wondering if Kanacyn could be used in conjunction with Formalin for precautions against secondary infection. Thanks for the input

Formalin is not effective for the treatment of "Ich". Hyposalinity, in a separate tank, is the best method for puffers.

I agree with using hypo instead. Formalin should never be used in a display tank. They had better check the ammonia now. You can use hypo right in the display if it does not contain live rock or inverts. Check the pH daily under hypo and add a buffer as needed.

She's monitoring the ammonia and trites. She only used a 1/2 dose of formalin. I will let her know what you suggested.....thanks!
