i don't know what to say about the blueish/green colour i would agree that its a defective bulb except both of them are the same...
how many fans in the canopy and how many CFM does each one move? what brand are the bulbs?

Sorry to bug you again Electric but does the "unofficially" mean there is some risk of that combo starting a fire or just possibly not starting properly. I don't care about losing the cost of the bulbs but I obviously don't want to burn my house down. Thanks for all of the info. I personally think there should be a lighting only forum and if they were looking for a mod. you would get my vote. Thanks again.

it looks like it goes past the white phase and into the green as it starts up.

i called advance transformer once to ask them about this. i called a couple times actually. they kept saying "don't do it, their not designed for that." then finally one guy said, "don't do it, but 'unofficially it will be fine."

175's will heat up your tank a few degrees if you don't have fans. man, for the price of that bulb, i would have gotten an XM or coralvue. something tried and true.

until you get rock and sand in there, it's hard to say what the final color will be. tanks always look a different color when they're empty compared to full, but that still does look pretty green.

i've put some aragonite in the bottom since that pic and 1 chink of rock ( so i feel like i've gotten somewhere with it ) - still green - I'll give it some time. if the ballast isnt correct for the bulbs would that effect the colour temp?

OK, I have not read every thread. I am a Noob with MH, Been a PC guy for the last 7 years. I purchased a Aqua Medic Ocean Light Combo, 2-250W DE, and 2-35wT5...
Just so I know, What kind of Ballast drives the MH?
What kind of ballast drives the T5?
What is the variety of bulbs that I can burn in the DE sockets?

The light came with 10k MH, and Actnic T5...
I do not have the tank restocked from my old tank yet but have the light hung and have run it. Think it will look good and can't wait to see the difference from my PC days...

1. M80 more than likely unless they advertise electronics. M80 is better
2. electronic
3. and 250w DE bulb you can find

PC's are horrible. you couldn't pay me to run them. MH's and T5's is a great combo.

i'm trying to make sure i have identified my ballast for future reference and have noticed in one place it was marked probe start and in another pulse start. i was hoping you could help me to figure out which i have - it is a 400w with an "gescap series hw" and an "ISB sola ignitor " - if i have an ignitor, that means that it is a pulse start correct?

thanks

Exclamation

I'm looking to get some MH's for my tank & have been offered a couple of DIY units & he says the ballasts are Tridonic does this mean anything to anybody?

They are powering S/E bulbs atm if that helps? & if someone understands that I'm looking to run 20k bulbs with those so can you reccommend a maker?

Cheers Shelton.

OK, he's come back with this info:

Ombis 150 Watt 1.8 Amps, they say High pressure sodium or Metal Halide (ML) Lamp use.

They are made in Austria and have BS 4017, they also have the bs kitemark on them.

Don't know about ANSI though.

I don't know about the start, wether it is probe or pulse, they come straight on when plugged in but won't restart if you turn them on and off then on again quickly unless you leave them off for a few minutes.

Cheers Shelton.

that's every MH whether probe, pulse, HQI or electronic. if they're for HPS, then they'll have an ignitor in the circuit which means they're either pulse start or 150w HQI. basically, you can run 150w DE's with them, that's about it.

if you can find SE 150's, you could run them. SE 150's just aren't very common. DE 150's are a lot more common. that's what i was thinking.
