Price of Duncans depends a lot on where they come from... ORA duncans and DFS Whisker duncans are going to be your most expensive because of their size and their commercial outlet... Viper has a great comparison pic between ORA and some Roe's Marine World Duncans... The RMW duncans are maybe 20% of the size of the ORA's...
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Where do I find these comparison pics? I tried searching RC for it but could not find them.

What? This pic?

My ORA duncan on the right completely dwarfs the wild collected duncan on the left.

There's only one species of duncans, D. axifuga.

The small ones are slightly over 1" and the ORAs can reach 4" across.

I keep mine up top under a 250w with my sps (this happened somewhat by accident). I started with 4 heads and now I've got around 25.

Same here, I'd heard that, but hadn't seen the evidence.

Will be seeking out ORA Duncans!

Some folks have 4 or 5 heads sprout up in 2 months or so. I got 2 heads about 3 weeks ago, and so far just one new head sprouting from another.

What kind of care do these guys need?? My lfs has about 4 different pieces ranging from 2 heads to 5 heads. They are really expensive, but i am thinking about picking one up. Are they photosynthetic or r they like tubastrea and need to be fed daily?

Feeding them promotes faster growth. But Duncans are photosynthetic. They are a deep water coral so low to moderate lighting will suffice for these guys. I keep mine on the sand bed and they are doing well under t5 lighting. There are diffrent colroations of duncans, i'd only pay alot for really nice greens ones. If they arent super green i wouldnt pay more than around 15 bucks a head. I paid 50 bucks for the picture i posted and that was for 4 heads or nice green ones.

The ones my lfs has r ultra green and the heads are a decents size. what would be a good price for ones with really good color?. I'm sure they have them marked up much more than they should be.

I have 3 small duncan colonies, 2 up high (within 8" of surface) and the other about 20" down. All colonies open up and do fine, I find the growth really happens when you feed a lot, mine don't seem to do better/ worse as to their height in the tank.
I did use Jen's blog as a fragging guide, however I found the heads were difficult to cut apart, I tried but 3 of the 4 haven't opened up- I hope I didn't kill them. Time will tell. So when you frag be certain they're big enough, I found a 6-8 headed colony wasn't developed enough to make good, clean cuts to separate 1 head from the other.

Value is in the eye of the beholder. If you think they're worth what the LFS is asking, then they're worth it. Small colony or not, they grow fast and they're hard to kill... so you should get your moneys worth out of them at some point. That's my perspective anyway.
I say everyone that has them should grow them, frag them, and sell/trade them at a decent price even if it means taking a small loss. Then the big dogs won't be able to overcharge for them anymore.

well i picked up a nice piece with 7 heads and an 8th starting to form. It was a little pricey, but has great green coloring, i think it was worht it. Only 3 heads have opened so far since i put it in my tank, but hopefully tomorrow they will all be open. what kind of foods do these guys like. The regular mysis and other small meaty stuff.

Yup, mysis, chopped up shrimp bits, etc. They seem to regurgitate all their food if you overfeed them, probably not healthy for them.

I stopped target feeding mine. I have alot of sps in my tank so i feed golden pearl. They puff up and close in when i feed the tank so i know they are catching plenty out of the wc.

I keep mine on the substrate under t5s in my 15 nano. They catch mysis when I feed all my suncorals and Dendros. Started with 2 heads and now have 5.
