Return Pump for a Sump

I have put together a sump using an overflow I got from Ebay. It was rated at 1250 gph so I bought a Mag 9.5. The overflow is not putting our the rate I expected, so the Mag is pumping too much water too quickly. Any suggestions as to how I can throttle the flow back? I am ruuning the pump dirctly into 1 inch flexible hose with a PVC connection at the tank. Any help would be deeply appreciated

By the way, Happy New Year!
