Fish of the Week... Eels!

due to an overwhelming demand the fish of the week this week is Eels- if you have any photos to share this is the place
this shot of a Blue Ribbon Eel was taken with my trusty old Canon G2 a few years ago:

we should give Eels some more time but in a few days we'll switch over to Anglers.

OMG! Do you keep a garden eel?
Can you tell me some about him like how deep is the sand bed, what he eats, is he in a reef setup, tankmates and is he very shy? or isnt it the right thread to discuss? They are one of my favourite fish.

Good luck with him

OMG! Do you keep a garden eel?

yup yup! i sure do!

Can you tell me some about him like how deep is the sand bed, what he eats, is he in a reef setup, tankmates and is he very shy?

The sand bed is 8" of southdown...

He eats mysid shrimp? (the little ones that swarm in a reef tank) baby brine... anything small that floats by... cyclopeze... etc...

He is in my 30g SPS only cube setup

Only tankmate is a red mandarin...

They are VERY VERY VERY SHY!!! he gets scared by hermit crabs snails... etc... not a good tankmate with anything that moves fast or will compete with him for food. He likes it when my pumps shut off and will pop out about 3-4" and check everything out... really cool fish, but def not for beginners... they are so small they can get sucked into any pump opening and are awfull swimmers! LOL

So really unless you want a dedicated tank they are not a good fish...

my thought is when i get my house i am going to get a custom tank made... about 8' long 12" wide and 36" deep... have it inwall behind a bar or something... and then put a 20" DSB in it and then put in mabe 12 or 14 garden eels and thats it... a tunze wavebox or some sort of surge device. I think that would be one of the coolest things ever! (then frame the tank so you can only see the top 1" of sand)

Garrett that would be an awesome set-up. I really admire people who put their focus on replicating a particular area of a reef environment. Good luck with that set-up!

P.S. You might look into putting a two-way mirror in the front of the tank, so that the eels won't get spooked by people walking in front of the tank. But then again, cleaning the front glass would have to be done from the inside. - but then again - you won't be running strong lighting so algea growth should be minimal.

P.P.S. Those pictures rock people!
