Red face Kordon Amquel and Amquel Plust

Well I don't know where this goes, doesn't seem like its equipment so heres the problem,
Well here in SF just a few days ago there was that big storm that knocked out my power for a few hrs. Since I don't have a back up power plan, I read a older post here somewhere that mentioned it was good to keep a bottle of amquel on hand. So I tossed some of this stuff in to my tank for the meanwhile and everything looked fine. I went out for a few hrs came back power was back corals didn't look to good though they were all closed up and my anthelias didn't look to great. But I didn't think of it too much, than the next morning the water looked cloudy a bit and the coral still closed up, the anthelias looked like they were melting away. This once happened before when I used amquel but it never came to my attention that it was the cause. Until this happened once more and it seems to be the cause of my problem. What should I do and who has had similar experiences wit this product?

Thanks. I discuss it, including the unknowns about its toxicity briefly here:

The first time I used it was Amquel Plus and it bleached all my zoas and killed off my anthelias. I read it not toxic if Over dosed and I believe I used more than directed. The 2nd time whne I had a power outage I used Amquel this time and I did the same thing and it caused my corals to look like crap. So both times these 2 amquels caused problems. I did throw in a bag of carbon.

How do you know they looked like crap from the Amquel? Maybe they would look like crap from the power failure?

FWIW, I doubt carbon will bind much if any Amquel, but it might bind other wastes in the water from bacteria or other organisms.

I do not know what is in the plus version that makes it plus, but I see no reason to use it. Ammonia is what you need to bind, and regular Amquel does that.

I believe I used more than directed.

Like a little more, or ten times more?

Whats the effects if you used twice as much? It says a cap full per 10g. I also tried this stuff and I got the same effects above. From the website it says its safe if you accidental overdose.

Twice as much is not likely to be a problem, IMO. Ten or a hundred times as much likely is a problem. Being a biodegradable organic, it may fuel a bacterial bloom if you add enough, just as vodka/sugar/vinegar can. Adding it when aeration is low, if it causes O2 consumption, might be a concern.

It should be fine in a hospital tank, up to the recommended dosage level.

I've used the regular Amquel and the plus for QT's, and in shipping bags for both fish and corals. Never had a problem from the Amquel. Unless it was grossly over dosed, I'd expect the problems with your corals had more to do with what ever occured to make you add it, rather than the fact that you added it.

I recall Boomer having problems with the plus version. But he was still ok with the regular Amquel. He said he might get on line while he is out of town. Maybe he'll pop in. I can't recall what his problem was with Amquel +.

Thats what happens when you get old. The memory is the first to go.
