Two dottybacks?

Does anyone have experience with putting two dottybacks in one tank. I am interested in getting a Fridmani (Orchid) dottyback, and maybe a Flavivertex (Sunrise) dottyback. Also, could I keep 2 Fridmani in the same tank. These would be going in my 40 Breeder with lots of places to hide.

I know someone with 2 Fridmani in a 120, but would they work in a smaller tank.

I know nothing will work 100% of the time, but what are the chances?

Any info would be greatly appreciated.

I used to have a matted pair of the Sunrise DottyBacks and that was cool, but eventually they became unmated and one went disappearing. I don't think you will have much luck with multiple Dottybacks. I don't due dotty backs anymore. I lost all my innverts over a weekend from the remaining Sunrise Dotty back after he had a temporary stay when I was moving. He tore apart my tiger pistol, coral banded, cleaner shrimps, everything.

I have 3 dottybacks in a 180.

I'm not sure about in a 40 gallon.

If you do attempt it, I would definitely go with two different species (unless of course you can find a pair).

Hi Mudskipper1,

I would not suggest putting more than 1 Orchid/Fridmani in a 40g. Orchids and Neons are more territorial and will kill there own kind and other dottybacks.

Your best bet is captive bred Sunrise Dottybacks. You may be able to do 2 in a 40g. They are still territorial but will probably just chase and not shred each other.

I have had success with 3 captive bred Sunrise dottybacks in a 75g and 2 have spawned within 3 months of adding them.

so which is less aggressive? The Sunrise or orchid? Premium aquatics says that the sunrise is more aggressive, but idk.

So orchids would not be likely to form a mated pair?

In my experience the Sunrise is much less aggressive then the Orchid. Captive bred in general are less aggressive than wild caught. Unless you have a guaranteed mated pair of orchids your chances of getting 2 individual orchids to mate before they kill each other will be a shot in the dark.

I have three P. Fridmani in my 125 gall reef. At times they do chase each other around. They were all placed into the tank at the same time.

I tried it trying to get spawning pairs and ended up with more dead fish than I like. Proceed with extreme caution and make sure you can get the weaker fish out.
And that was with more 'peaceful' dotties........

I ended up getting an orchid dottyback, and a Canary Blenny. Both were aquacultured from www.Saltwaterfish.com They should arrive on thursday, and lets hope they are friendly to each other and the clowns. Thank you for all your help
