Looking 4 ideas on a blue fish vacancy

The current population of the tank is:
Longnose butterfly
2 perculas
Gramma
Green mandarin

The tank is 1 year old, 65g soft +LPS reef.
I would love to add something bright blue to it as 1 last fish. Green chromis I find to be not bright enough, both in color and character. Any ideas for a reef-safe non- aggressive candidate will be welcome.

My LFS has a blue tilefish, which is very pretty. Seems to hide a lot, though. Here is a link to similar fish from the web. They appear to be challenging to keep:

Some of the blue damsels (not chromis) are fairly (relatively) peaceful and electric blue. A small blue devil or yellowtail blue damsel might be okay with the fish you have. So some research, you may find a species that would be a good fit and the color you are looking for.

A blue assessor is a shy fish, and kind of a deep blue. Nice fish, but not outgoing enough for your tank mix, IMO.

A Hippo Tang may work for you. I have one in a 75. Very active. A speedy eater at feeding times. With a good diet, the coloration is a deep, rich blue.

An adult hippo tang will outgrow the 65 (and your 75). They are a beautiful, brilliant blue and are super nice fish. But I have seen adults about the size of a dinner plate. My brother-in-law got a tiny one about a year ago. It has already outgrown his 90 gallon tank.

Yes. The Hippo will eventually outgrow the 65 (and my 75). Check out a Bicolor angel (max 6 inches). Some of the blue Angels are nice, but I know most grow very large. Not sure which stay on the small side. Keep in my one angel per size per tank (unles you have a very large tank).

Yellowtail Blue damsel. I have 2 and they are model citizens. They hold their own but do not bother anyone. Once in a blue moon they will chase my firefish. ALso a Cherub angel, It might be a little hit or miss on eating SPS.

I 2nd the Yellow-Tailed Blue Damsel. I've had three in my 120 for the last year or so with no major problems. They will harass new (small) fish for 24 hours, but that'll happen with any fish.

Starcki Damselfishes are just gorgeous in my eyes. There is also a blue chromis...
If you want to risk it, some of the angelfishes from the Argi complex are also beautiful.

The LaMarck angel may get a bit large for your tank, but it is a light blue, one of the hardier Genicanthus angels, is reef safe, and can be paired. They get to about 9 inches as adults, but IME are slow growers.

Damsels are way too agressive and the hippo would definitely need a larger tank.

I agree with buddythelion a Starki Damsel would look awesome and they are peaceful for a damselfish.

Ok, I third it!
If you ask me the yellow tail blue damsels are beautiful and you will be hard pressed to find a striking blue like that.
It is one of the most ,if not the most mellow damsel around.

here is a picture of mine ,In my tank he usually has a rich bluish purple . I guess it can vary with your lighting.
My cameras flash always makes it look like this though.

It is one of the most ,if not the most mellow damsel around.

I have a yellowtail damsel and all I can say is I HATE THIS FISH!!!!! Very territorial and Aggressive!!!!!!!


He was the last to be added, so I figured no prob with other fish being terrized b/c I would not be adding any other fish.
Was I wrong! I added two shrimp recently and he reaks havic on them both. Anything that goes near him, he will attack. And he means business!!



So AVOID this fish!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This thread taught me a lot, and the first thing ive learned is 2 express myself more clearly. So, lat me clarify a few thing: first, I am looking for a small fish (isn’t a hipo tang short for a hippopotamus?). I am definitely not looking for trouble significantly increasing my fish load. Second, blue reef chromis would get my vote if the species would be available (unfortunately, I am not in the US and never seen 1 alive for 10 years in business, which is long before I started my own tank).
Third, I am kind of damselphobic (after reading what people went through to get rid of a killer one). Love the way they look but unsure/nerves about the risks. A yellowtail is an easy option, but how likely is it 2 end in a disaster?

More complications: as read sea stuff is native around here, it is protected wildlife and is forbidden to import or own
Love blenies though
I know this one is tricky, as I am under more constrains than most of u out there.

Again, id like 2 tank u all for participating, and keep'm coming!

Another vote for the yellowtail blue damsel. They are cheap, hardy, they have personality and are absolutely beautiful, and I have never had any behavior problems in a larger tank. It is fairly easy to get them to pair up and they spend most of their time interacting with each other.
