from my experience blue leg hermits have been amazing tank inhabitants, they wont knock the rock over mines never grew much and they last a very long time.

Emeralds are questionable; I would just stick to different types of snails:

Astrea
Nerite
Nass.
Cerith
Turbos (they're bulldozers in the tank when they're large)

my emerald used to think it was a decorator crab...would toss my coral everywhere...pull the plugs right out of the rock...

blue leg hermits have never done anything bad in my tank....

but i have resorted to a plethora of snails in my tank...nassarius, cerith, astrea, margarita, trochus, strawberry conch

I'm going to get a porcelain crab or two when I get back from vacation. Cleaner shrimp are awesome, have personality and are bold and always on the move.

TK, what have you had knocked over by hermits? I've found that mine climb all over my corals, but rarely knock them down. I've found snails, especially turbos, to be the culprit of overturned corals. That said, there are plenty of ways to secure coral and rocks so that they can't be moved by small snails and hermits. I use the wedge-until-encrusted technique, which is pretty crude, but I've had luck supergluing frags to rubble and rocks, and there are underwater putties that can be used to attach small rocks and plugs.

Only snails for me.

The only thing my hermits ate were my snails.

How long have your hermits lived?

Will cleaner shrimp also scavenge crud on the rock?
