Unhappy Warning about furan-2 dip for zoo pox.. lost a beatiful colony!!

My experience with Furan-2 dip was horrible, i lost amost my whole colony of beatiful zoos three different kinds on one rock.. trying to rid a smaller patch of zoo pox.

What i did:
I used 1 cap of Furan-2
3 gallon bucket of D/I water w/ph buffer and equal temp
2 drops of lugols
approximately 18 minute dip
Rinsed with tank water

this killed over half of all my polyps most of which was NOT infected!!! they began to dissolve over the next few days. the infected ones just dissolved as well..

Dont know exactly what if anything i did wrong but i Hope you all can learn from my mistakes, If i could do it all over again i wouldnt touch them.

I would rather let the zoo pox maybe kill them instead of just killing them by treatment.

Very hurt behind this... does anyone think they will eventually come back???? i do have a few good ones that appear to be surviving for now

Why did you combine iodine and the furan-2? You shouldnt mix two different chemicals together especially at high concentrations like that.

yep the dip said nothing about lugols, i did that to kill some parasites and bristle worms, but i dint think it would be a problem siince in dip my zoo as a preventative method, treated the water with luguls a few hours prior to adding the furan-2... should have known not to combine the two, my neglagenc and lack of detail direction following.

Looking back i should have never ever left my zoo in a lugols dip for over 3 minutes. i never have prior to this...

yep 18 mins is too long, up to 5 is sufficient to get it done.

well, even though he only did a very low concentration of lugols, that's not the issue. the fact that the two chemicals were mixed probably just caused way too much stress on the coral....

sorry about the loss. u would probably loose the coral anyway if it would've went untreated.
I read that if u let a zoa colonly that is infected with zoa pox, allow it to air dry for 3 hrs then put it back. Sounds crazy but read it worked.

I tried the zoa cure and I killed about 17 frags and 4 colonies. Sad day. I have 1 baby that survived from my favorite colony. I hope he makes it.

I have dipped about 5 colonies and a couple frags that had zoa pox. I followed the method exactly and i never lost a single one. All of them recovered very well from the pox.

Sorry for your loss M8,

but you should have used tank water for the Furan2 dip. This way they can stay in the dip for longer, I'm sure the RO/DI water with the length of the dip wasn't to helpful either. I think that is why on zoaid.com the guy that came up with the Furan2 dip is using tank water as well.......Not sure about mixing the 2 chems as I have done that as well with no issues but I was using tank water......
