Post Proposed Lighting Setup - Another one...

I know lighting has been hashed out time and time again... T5's, VHO's, etc, etc, etc.... but I still need some advice, pretty please

Current Tank and Plan: 120gal AGA RR, Oceanic Model 2 Sump, 2 - 1" Sea Swirls, ASM G2 Skimmer, BlueLine Pump, 180lbs Live Rock, No Lights Yet (can't make up my mind) - reef safe fish, softies, perhaps some LPS, distant SPS maybe (no interest right now).

After sifting through everyone's experiences, and with my cycling tank in mind (3rd week), I've narrowed my choices (for now) to two configurations:

1. SLS Maristar 250w 4' Hood with 20000k AB DE Halides + 2 T5 Bulbs (TBD)
2. AquaMedic DE Pendants (2x250w) with 20000k AB DE Halides + SLS T5 Retro Kit + 2 Bulbs (TBD)

I'll have to see a couple different T5 bulbs together with the 20000k halides to make a decision on color, but at $30 each it won't hurt too bad to try a few. I'm looking at the ATI AquaBlue and ATI Sun bulbs to start.

I'm set on the DE Halides and T5's, but need to really justify the extra cost involved with the Maristar unit. Is it really worth the $300-400 extra over the pendant and T5 retro setup?

Thanks for any input!

I think the SLS Maristar is worth the cost if you want to have an open top tank. If you plan to have a canopy I would retro and save the money you will need it!

Thanks for the response. I do have a custom built canopy that has an open top with some structural cross braces. If the fixture were heavy enough I wouldn't trust the cross braces and would probably hang it from the ceiling.

But regardless of the type of mounting, the fixture wouldn't be seen from the outside (only from behind the tank). If you don't see the fixture, is it still worth the extra $ ???

Ok, it basically comes down to a $250 difference between the AquaMedic Pendants + T5 Retro kit and the Maristar Fixture with ballasts and bulbs.

Is the Maristar worth the extra $250 if it will be hidden inside the canopy (hanging from the ceiling)?
