Question Calfo Overflow system?

I am new to reef central and to reef keeping. Started in Oct with 55 gal. with 20 gal miracle mud 3 compartment refugium. A corner overflow drains to the refugium over bioballs then flows into the center where the miracle mud is (and where I have 6 red mangrove plants) then flows into the last compartment where I have a hang on protein skimmer and the return water is pumped up to the dual return. Everything, about 15 corals and 15 reef safe fish are doing well but I quickly learned I don't have enough space for all I want to do!!!! A rather common problem, I think!

I am in the process of upgrading to a 125 gal 60x18x25 glass tank from glass cages in TN. I need to give them a diagram of the overflow. I want to do it right this time - BUT I'm not experienced enough to know what is the best design! I have read that the Anthony Calfo overflow design is one of the best. I am trying to get some diagrams to give to glass cages on how one is built. I've also read that a traditional overflow with standpipe etc. has better circulation if there are some holes to pull water from the bottom, middle and top of the overflow wall? Could I get some feedback from those of you who really know what you're doing and have experience in this area?

Thanks for any HELP I can get concerning this!

cheers, my friend... welcome to RC and thew hobby There are som many wonderful things to explore and learn... even (and especially) these planning and design stages.

We have a lot of information stored in the archives... some detailed/dated and alphabetical lists too. Do begin with a keyword/phrase search for "calfo overflow" or "horizontal overflow" and take note of the larger threads with a concentration of posts and input for your info gathering consensus.

My advice is that if the bioload you will be keeping and/or the style of husbandry you choose to run depends heavily on protein skimming... then yes, please do a horizontal overflow.
