DIY canopy

I havent been able to find any good diy plans here for a canopy. Does anybody have any. I am thinking about one that would open the front half up to access the tank. Would I be better off buying one already made and modifying it? Most of the ones that I found for sale don't seem too tall. I want to put MH's in it and they are not high enough. Does anybody have links to sites that sell them.

Thanks
nicky

Personally I would not buy one. Kind of a ripoff if you ask me. Cost me about $20 in wood to make one. Post a picture of your setup and some dimensions of the top edge of your aqaurium.

check out the canopy on this site:

You need to navigate to the actual constructions pictures from the links on the left side of the page.

I've got some pics of the canopy that I just built for my 75 gallon tank in my gallery if you want to check that out. Not the best canopy but it works. It houses a 4 foot PFO reflector with dual 250w halides and dual 110w VHO.

Thanks for all the replys. Some nice ideas and links. A few of them were above my skill level. I only have basic hand tools but I'm pretty good with my hands. I'm thinking about taking a few ideas from each one.

My tank is a 40 gallon breeder. It measures 36 1/4" x 18 1/4" on the outside of the black frame.

I like the way the top flips up to access the bulbs.

Very nice work. That looks better than most I've seen for sale.

Once again thaks for all the suggestions.

I also have a 40 breeder. In theory, I was building a canopy this weekend. In reality, I puttered around and did nothing. I plan to make my canopy with a double hinged top. One hing in the back so that the entire top can lif off, and a hinge almost in the front, so that the front and a couple of inches of the top will lift up as one unit. Hopefully, I can build it with only two pieces of 1/2" plywood quarter panels (quarter panel = 2'x4' piece). I'll post some pictures when I'm done.

The breeder is short, and the stand I have (store bought) is short, so I think it's important that both the front and the top can be lifted.

I'll be putting a single 175W MH in the hood.

Below is the thread with my recently finished canopy. Has dimensions and tools used. It's a 90G canopy, but you can adapt the measurements.
