Refugum question

I have had an 18 gallon reef for a with just lr and 2 fish. Got some though about buying another tank and making it a refugum like I see many people doing here. Problem is I have no clue what I am doing.

What exactly is a refugum and what does it do-
and how do you set on up-

A refugium is a segregated part of your system, often placed in the sump, where you can grow nutrient exporting algae and allow pods to grow without being molested by the main tank inhabitants.

Here is an article.

A fuge is a safe haven for the small critters like copepods, amphipods, small worms, mini-stars and other wee critters that are so beneficial to your tank. It usually has low flow, LR and LS. It can be planted with macro algae. It needs lighting but not nearly as intense as that used on the main tank. It is devoid of fish or corals that might consume the little guys that flourish in the fuge.
