Grocery shopping (for reef supplies)

So ive heard about a couple of differant things you can buy at the grocery store to use in your tank, like vinager (for PH control?) and Pickling lime (Kalk) or baking soda (again for PH control?) Ive even heard of vodka, Im not fully sure on some of these.

Lets make a grocery list of all the differant things you can buy at the store and why/how you use them in your reef tank! one i know forsure

1. Pickling lime - Found in the canning section of grocery stores (sometimes only found in the summer and fall when most people are canning) Mrs. Wages is one major supplier.
This is used in replace of Kalkwasser and used in the same way.

If you want to add any info on 1. feel free. Like the ingredients to Mrs. Wages or how you dose it.

We should be able to get a list of at least 10 items, i think. Alot of these items are cheaper than what you would pay for something of the same matter in a LFS. For instance 1lb of pickling lime was $3, 1lb of Kalk would be more like $20 This will make our hobby easier on the wallet.
Shop On!!

Mrs. Wages' dosage should be inline with most kalwasser dosages (1 tsp to 1 gallon of water)

Other items (some you mentioned):
============================
1. Baking Soda - used in Randy's 2 part
2. Epsom Salts - magnesium
3. Dowflake/Tetra Flake - Calcium part of Randy's two part
4. Vinegar - I've never used it for pH, but its awesome for lossening calcium deposits on pumps, etc.
5. Vodka - yes, but yuo have to be careful with dosages, used to boost nitrifying bacteria population

Mag Flake magnesium chloride isn't at the grocery store, but some people can buy it locally as a snow melter.

Baking soda doesn't alter pH very much. It's usable as an alkalinity supplement, though. Vinegar can be dosed to lower pH by adding small amounts to the tank, but often seltzer water is a better choice.

A magnesium test kit will indicate whether more magnesium is needed.

Guy

This article and the ones at the bottom of this article will give most of what you need

A Simplified Guide to the Relationship Between
Calcium, Alkalinity, Magnesium and pH

These 3 will discuss Alk/buffers, vinegar and Seltzer water

High pH: Causes and Cures (vinegar and Seltzer water)

What is Alkalinity? ( talks about Alk, buffers and more on pH) about

This calculator will tell how much of what kind you need, i.e., Ca++, Mg++ and Alk
