I just visited Glass Cages.

I just got back from a visit to Glass Cages. (www.glasscages.com)

All I can say is WOW!

Some of the tanks in the shop were HUGE! I'm talking 15 feet long with 4 overflows along the back.

Tom, the owner was very nice and basically gave me the grand tour. I watched the glass shop building a tank. Then we went over the the acrylic department. Awesome.

He showed me the difference between regular glass and low iron (AKA starphire) glass. You can't really tell much difference looking at it straight on, but when you look from the side, it's a huge difference.

I had lots of questions and Tom was more than happy to show what he had and how he did it.

If you are looking for a tank not just a big tank, glasscages is the way to go!

It's black plastic, like you would find around any 'store bought' aquarium.

Most aquariums don't have the plastic going up and down. I believe that may be what he is refering too. I could be wrong though.

Do you think the low iron would make ANY difference on a tank when viewing from the front??

I'm hoping to order a 150 from them in the future with starphire front glass. It's supposed to be much nicer when looking at it from an angle.

That's the way I saw it, of course the piece I saw wasn't on a tank yet. I'm sure a tank full of water would make a difference.

You could really see a difference in the tint when not looking straight at it.

Oh, either way, it's plastic.

I didn't see any aquariums like the one in the link. The only one's I saw just had molding around the top and bottom.

If you are thinking about a low iron (starphire) tank;

Have you ever looked at the end of the glass on aquariums?

That green tint you see on the end goes all the way through the glass, it's not just on the corner.

On low iron glass (starphire) the end is perfectly clear and so is the rest of the glass.

You might not be able to tell much difference looking at a regular tank and a low iron glass tank, but when you see the glass stock side by side, you can really tell the green tint.

Yeah I know about the green when looking through the edges...I have seen that in pics...I just wondered if it was worth it when you looking at the tank normaly. I plan to get my tank from them and I am probably going to use the low iron...just wanted to hear what you thought since you saw it.

That tank could have been a special order.

If you wanted it trimmed in black like that I'm sure Tom would have no problem doing it.

I didn't see any tanks like that when I was there.

I asked him if he could just use black silicon and he said no I like that look but I dont really want the trim on the outside like that. I wonder why he wont use it...others do. Anyone else ever ask him about this?
