Uncurred LR into established tank?

What would be the tanks response to putting a piece of LR approx. 5lbs into it that is not curred?

Situation..one piece of LR has a bunch of hair algae (looks like carpet) on it. Guy at LFS gave me a good idea of taking it out and boiling it in a pot which will kill everything on it. Then place back into tank. What do ya'll think about it? Thanks

yup yup it will kill EVERYTHING, so whats the point in doing it?
Why not just scrub the dickins out of it before placing it in the tank and have a clean-up crew already in the tank?

already did that 2 times before and it still comes back only on that one piece never anywhere else and i already have and had a clean up crew and they dont touch it. Thats why it is ong and hairy. Doing it so that the hair algea wont come back.

how about scrubbing it, and then a blackout period by putting it into a curing bucket with no light for a week or more? Otherwise boiling it would obviously work but then you'd just have a piece of dead rock than would take a while to get re-established.

I would agree with vapormd about the external curing if you can swing it. IF you cant, i dont think 5 lbs in a fairly established tank is going to destroy everything. if your goal is to up the rock to reef tank quantity just do it in small amounts every other month. Kinda like going through mini cycles every other month. or for that matter just like adding fish. Add them, let the bacteria catch up, then add something else, etc.

I am getting that if i boil the LR it may cause a mini cycle? I plan to add more LR but this one piece is just killing me seeing all the hair algae on it.
