I would say start with 6 hours (but what do I know. I've only been in this since January). Maybe 10AM-4PM. As you accumulate more snails and can afford the extra lighting time, you can move up. That's what I did anyways, and I've made it to ten and decided to stop. ^_^

the time is up to you as long as its the same time everyday. I set my timers so that the lights come on at 11am and go off at 11pm since I view my tank mostly in the evening. I only have a pile of rocks so far so I don't think a specific photoperiod is needed. 12hrs might not be right for your setup, but you get the idea

I turn mine on at night to help with the heat (3PM Vho on/ 5PM MH on/1AM MH off/3AM VHO off). Most people leave their light on longer, but this is what work for me.

What are you keeping in your tank? What type of lighting do you have? What are you planning to keep in the feature?

mine are on at 8AM and off at 11PM. A little extra for my high-light corals (since I only have PCs).
