Question Apstasia Problem

Hey guys,
I'm having a apstasia outbreak. What do you guys think I should try? I put in a couple of peppermint shrimps but i think my crosshatch pair made quick work with them. I hear berghia nudibranches work but kind of expensive. I hear from another person saying they have a angel fish that eats it. Does anyone know if that's true? Please help since i can't use the peppermint shrimp method. Thanks for all the help!

Will

I've tried joe's juice also and they just come back. Never tried kalk paste, is it similar to joe's juice?

P.S. Paging TrojanScott, what kind of angelfish did you get that ate apstasia???

Peppermint shrimp seem hit-or-miss. I had some that ate small aiptasia for sure, but they did not survive long in my tank (I think my pistol shrimp took them out).

Joe's Juice is sure to kill them if you apply it properly. If there are many, it may be tedious. You need to feed them the solution. They eat it up and die! Very clean.

You shouldn't buy animals to control pests unless you're able to feed them after they eat all the pests. Joe's Juice works in one shot (per anemone), and it won't hurt any other creatures if you use it correctly.

You can try a kalkwasser slurry, as well. Make a thick mixture of kalkwasser and inject it as carefully as possible in the anemone's mouth, or into the body if you can get a piercing needle. I found JJ easier and more effective, since the anemone's want to eat it.

Did you boil RO/DI water or salt water? Since fresh water would tend to float upward, correct?

And what type of syringe did you use?

I tried this method as well and I do not think that I employed it correctly.

I've done it all when it comes to aiptasia. Joe's Juice is a pain. I've done boiling water, it does work, IMO, but you have to be so good about making sure your remove every part of the anemone out of there, it eventually grows back.
Copperbands are a bad idea. Not only are they hit or miss, they normally die in captivity period! They're very difficult to keep.

Berghias do work, but they are expensive, and in my experience, are not very hardy, or they becmoe food. It's also a long process if you have a tank that is infested with aiptasia.

I've probably got 10 peppermints, or have had, and they never touched it.

I agree, keeping a fish you can't feed after the aiptasia are gone is a bad idea, and isn't responsible.
BUT.... the ugliest fish I own is also one of my favorites. The Klein's butterfly fish. Not only has he demolished my aiptasia, he's a model citizen in my tank, doesn't pick on corals, and eats anything I feed him. Do a search on the fish. They're considered friendly with other fish, and they do eat whatever. They're easy to keep. I'm sure not ALL feed on aiptasia, and certainly some might nip at corals. As with all fish, and can be hit and miss.
For me, though, he's been awesome. No problems at all, and aiptasia GONE.

1). I used salt water staight from the tank...Boiled.

2). Small plastic syringe is what I use...

3). Here is the trick don't go after the smaller guys....(Sucks but let them get big enough for the syringe)..

First I play with aptasia for a while with the syringe (Causing it to go back into what ever hole it came out of)... Then after messing with it a while (minute or two). I then fill the syringe with the boiled water. I then place the syringe in the mouth of the aptasia and blast it with a quick shot. Give it a few minutes if it does not come out of the hole than you have got one......

If it does come back out of the hole you have missed and I would try the process again. It took me two tries but now I am a PRo at it!

how about the boiled water WITH Kalk.

am am using chilled Kalk slurry in my 3 ml syringe and it is working great. i agree that the small ones are hard to get and if they are a bit bigger are easier to inject. i guess that runs the risk of letting them spread but the small ones are too hard to shoot.

I tried Kalk slurry in a syringe for the first time last week. They seriously died in front of my eyes. I had no ill effects to rics, shrooms or even a mini carpet that was 2" away from one of the larger aips. This was all in a 20g tank.

There are no signs of return.

If you have an infestation, injecting will take a long time. and with the size of your tank, it would take a long time. I was trying to get a group deal for some berghia earlier and would still be interested. LMK if you're interested. Anyone else who is interested, also let me know

what if you take the whole rock and dip it into boil water or kalkwasser mix? I have to move my tank in Jan which mean I have to remove all of my rock to the new tank. May be I jst do a boil water dip before I put the rock in the new tank

Be careful that you dont have any palys/zoos on that rock. Boiling water can kill them and release the palytoxins they might contain.

I have an emporator angel that ate all of mine. No prolem with corals, but I could be just lucky. I've tried everything else. Peppermint shrimp didn't work, bergehia ate one or two and died and copperband worked great but could only keep them alive for a few months at a time.
