DIY powerhead magnet mounts
I need to make some mag mounts for my maxi jets. the suction cups don't seem to work anymore. i know you can use some magnets from a hobby store like micheals or hobby lobby. What is the epoxy/coating used to over the magnets. Any info or good links?
Thanks

awesome I guess they are already sealed so you don't have to do it yourself. What sort of glue works on them? Super glue gel?

they look tiny. Would they hold up a seio 820?

I wonder if the smaller one (item #BX084PC-BLK ) would work well enough?
What kind of pull force is needed to hold thru different thicknesses of glass tank? How would these compare to simply using different size MagFloats? |

I thought about mag floats but they are fairly large. I like these small ones but I wonder if they are better and cheaper in the long run than fabricating ones.

I use the AlgaeFree Sure Grip magnetic powerhead holders, those things are beasts.

I ordered 3 of those rubber coated ones that Neptune linked for the outside of my magnet mount, on the inside i am encasing these in resin
http://www.kjmagnetics.com/proddetail.asp?prod=BX0X04 With a pull force of 85lbs on the inside and 50 on the outside it should hold This is my prototype swivel mount.

i need to resurrect this project and get my MJs mounted. I will need 6 magnets total. Will these work?
http://www.magnet4less.com/product_i...roducts_id=146 I think they need to be coated with epoxy. If so what should I coat them with? This will be holding up a 1200 and a few 900s. Thanks

No those won't be strong enough. You need at least 65lbs pull force, 80-100 would be better.
Buy some casting resin from your local crafts supply. Here is mine in action

did you attach the mount to the top cover of the MJ? these have 90 lbs. I hate to go too strong though

nm about the mount. I scrolled up lol. How strong do these things really need to be. My Tunze 6025 manual says they are between 55 and 110 and I find them to be a bit too strong.
Also did you add any rubber feet to your mounts? I would be concerned about damaging the glass.

Nope, no rubber feet.
I used 65lbs pull force for mine, and they won't work on 1/2" glass. So it all depends on your glass. Mine is 3/8".

I would go with a min of 50lbs pull force.
What if you upgrade later though? Would be nice not to have to make them again eh?

Ok how bout these. they are 65lbs pull force. should do the trick.
http://www.kjmagnetics.com/proddetail.asp?prod=DX02 For the resin I found this at micheals. There is a local one so I will probably just head there. Is this the right stuff. Want to make sure it is reef safe and all. http://www.michaels.com/art/online/d...ductNum=gc0509 Did you use a mold? Does the piece on the outside of the tank need a handle or grasp of some sort? Thanks
