Refractometer Group Buy

BARE Members-

We are going to order refractometers if there is enough interest among the clubs. We need to get 20 (min) on order to do a group buy. The price should be in the neighborhood of $35 for each, good quality refractometer. This is the RC-10-ATC model; nice viewfinder with temp compensation. So if you are interested in buying one; please reply to this thread and I will begin building a list of people who want one.

You are not required to be a club member to be part of the group buy; but please be local to the SF Bay Area (local pickup only).

It is a great price. Let me say that a Refractometer is the best way to test for salinity. Once it's calibrated it takes just seconds to test the water with a few drops of water placed on the prism. I'll ask Maureen bring hers to the meeting tonight for a demo.

I'll buy one too. Can't make the meeting tonight as I have a regular Wed night commitment - hope this isn't a permanent schedule change.

Russ,

I need some advice here. My biggest barrier to managing
a reef aquarium is being fairly color blind. Salifert kits are
a PITA for mee, and I need to have a friend help me read
some of the results.

Having used one of the refractometers, can you tell me if
my color perception is going to be a barrier here? Does
the refraction result in a line next to a scale, or is it a
color thing?

If usable, I'm in for one.

Thanks,

Jim

jim: if it's the one in the link
http://www.reefaquariumguide.com/sponsors/specials.php
(which i just bought for 50, heh)

then you'll see a verticle scale, salinity ratio on one side, ppt on the other in black ink. then the upper 1/2 of teh screen will be blue, the bottom half white. where these halves meet is where you take your measurement.

so if you can distinguish between a pretty true blue and white, then you shoudl be fine!

Jim-

Hard to say if color-blindness would be a problem in using a refractometer. Here is a description on how it works:

You put a few drops of water onto the prism and place the plastic cover over top to spread the water evenly across it.

Then you look through the viewfinder while pointing the refractometer at a bright light source. You will see a scale with numbers corresponding to salinity on one side and SG on the other.

How you read the scale is a 'color-shift'; but not between colors. You will see white on the bottom half and blue on the top half. Where the white/blue intersects along the scale is the measured salinity.

This is what you would see in the viewfinder:

If it does not work for you Jim; we'll re-sell it. I'm as soon as I order; there will be one or more people who wanted to get one....
