I actually read an interesting book on Kopi Luwak coffee. There is, actually, less bacteria growing on the surface of those beans than on regular coffee. Enzymes secreted by the palm civit (the cat that eats the coffee cherries and leaves the pit or bean in its feces) make the bean more resistant to bacteria growth.

compare that to lobster, which lives off of the garbage and crap that sinks to the bottom of the ocean You are what you eat (or drink, I guess)

oh. also, there is a larger version of the palm civit cat that lives in the tropical regions of Ethiopia. A version of this coffee is also produced there, as well.
