can melted plastic contaminate the water?

ive been using a 50 gallon rubbermaid storage bin for quite a while to mix my salt and my filtered water with a Rio 2100 pump...today i noticed some kind of oily film on the surface of the water and smelled a burning smell...i found that my pump fell off its suction bracket and was laying on the bottom of the bin and not working...it seems like it took a chunk off the storage bin by overheating under water? now theres some pieces of plastic floating on top of the water and is oily on the surface of the water...is it safe to still use the saltwater from the bottom of the bin? does the burning of plastic under water cause any kind of contamination? there is still about 40 gallons of water in the bin as of rite now...please help me guys...wat should i do?

I had thi shappen to me as well. I ran some carbon, and did a water change. MY heater went out and did this. As long as you run carbon that will help remove contaminents, as the water change.

This exact same thing happened to the pump that runs my coralife superskimmer 125. If we had not caught it in time it would have killed everything.

This happened a few days ago, so far we have lost one fish, two snails, and a xenia.

The lps and other softies look angry but looks like they will recover.

I have done a bunch of water changes and that has helped.

Does anyone know what chemical gets in the water when these pumps burn up, does it contaminate the rock and sand?

There's probably a thousand chemicals released from burning plastic and pump. You'd probably need to be a chemist to identify them. Like everyone has already said get rid of it. I would add get rid of the container too if you still smell the burnt plastic...

Yeah your probably right about all of the chemicals that could have been released.

I was really confused about the tiny black bits that ended up in the water and on the sand below the pump.

I guess these were a bunch of little plastic pieces that it spit out.
