I've used Dominicks water Island water in a pinch. Typically has TDS readings under 10. (Better than RO from some of the LFS)

I've been using Dominics R.O. water for years also, never had a problem with it . It's pretty cheap too .50 a gallon. you can use your own container or they have them there 1,3,&5 gallon containers I use the 3 gallon containers to mix my Kalkwasser in they have a convinient spout.

I usually get it from Coral Reef for .50 / gal but wasn't sure if they were changing the filter on time or not. I thought grocery stores would be better. I have heard people getting them from Meijer's as well. I don't have the device to measure how good the water is. However, I am definetly going to switch from LFS to grocery stores.

Just buy an RODI unit..... it'll pay for itself eventually... You only need to go as far as the laundry room to get water... if a crises arises at 3 AM you wont need to go get water... Theres a million reasons to have one....
As much as we spend on our tanks, whats about $100-$200 to ENSURE you have 0 TDS water ??? |

Does the RO / DI unit have to be connected to the tank? or can I put it in the laundry room? how does the water input works?

I fill up a Rubbermaid Brute Trashcan (available at Home Depot/Lowes), mix the salt in there, and pump it from the can into my tank.

another stupid question: what is the disadvantage of putting tap water and not RO? I understand that there are metals and stuff but what negative effect does it bring to the tank?
I see some / most people very strict about adding only RO even if it is 10oz of water.

Please suggest an inexpensive RO/DI system that I can put in my laundry room. Thats the only place where I have room. I have a drain in the laundry room.
What are different things to consider when buying an RO system. I change about 5 - 10 gallons of water weekly and 15 - 20 gallons on monthly.

I guess it's time to buy one. I'm also looking for a small one. Can someone recommend a decent that that would be good for 5 gallons/week?

Id suggest the Ocean Wave + for 160 from Filter Guyz (http://www.thefilterguys.biz/ro_di_systems.htm) or the Typhoon III from AirWaterIce (not sure if I can post the link, but you can google it if it doesnt work - http://www.airwaterice.com/product/1...er_75_GPD.html).
