Bobby, I will see If I can get out Pic's!!!
Throat was modded to 2" , feeding with sedra 5000, (center tube, was, also cut out) Air pump feed a limewood airstone, that is fed thru hole drilled in body of skimmer.
I believe any skimmer can easly be upgraded-- by just adding a airstone!!!
BTW, I am a card holding HVAC mechanic myself

Charlie, is there a skimmer you HAVEN'T modified

I've really GOT to start looking around for a better skimmer. I'm not happy with the performance of mine at all. Any suggestions?

It's an AquaC EV180, which I heard great things about before I bough it, and not so great things after. Ain't that always the way

I'm getting maybe 1/2 cup a week of skimmate, and it looks like green tea. One thing I'll say for them is they have great customer service, so I think I'll contact them before I throw in the towel on it, but the $450 I spent on the skimmer and Mag 9.5 would have gone a long way towards somthing better. Eh, first tank, first skimmer, live and learn I guess.

Well Now.. What was that saying?? those that don't remember thier mistakes are doomed to repeat them... (something like that)

Can we say "carpet wetter"

(at 4am this morning) Should not have "tweeked" it just before going to bed, and/or, should not have made it "self draining" the first day..

Pearson - what about putting a modded pump on there with a needle wheel or mesh wheel design...you think that may produce a little bit more sludge for ya than the 1/2 cup you get now? You have a 120g reef, and I also have been getting about 1/4-1/2 cup almost black coffee sometimes green tea out of my 30g...if that is normal, I would think you should be getting between 1 & 1-3/4 or 2 cups a week...I think...although it is too early in the day to try to think...

Also, is it a recirc model? If not, is there a way you could mod it in to a recirc skimmer? That should also help a bit from what I've seen...

Good skimmers? Our good friend Marvin, Has never lead me wrong!!
(He did not recommed the corallife super skimmer-- and neither do I)
I hope you find whats happening.. Is pump blocked (trash in it)?
Impeller OK?
Is air intake blocked (salt )?
Please let me know what you find out from Aqua-C..

Now that's an interesting idea. Anyone got a spare NW pump they can loan me for a week or two to try?

Just some general troubleshooting tips. Good tips, but N/A in my case. They have asked for pics of my setup. It seems really the problem is, the foam is not rising. All the nasty s**t that should end up in the cup, ends up stuck to the sides of the riser tube.

I'd still be interested in trying a pump sometime though. Maybe next weekend.

Thats the same thing that happens with my AquaC Remora Pro. I don't think a needle wheel pump will help, but it would be interesting to see.

Needle wheel pump would put out more bubbles though, especially with added air...which would push more to the collection cup...would it not?

If it is just sticking to the sides of the neck increase the water level in the skimmer and the nog will go to the cup instead. Sounds like it is producing skimmate but it is not being forced all the way up the riser tube.

I don't know about Josh, but mine is as high as it will go. I can physicalt get it higher, but if I rase it any past where it is, the water level in the skimmer will be above the air valve and it will not pull any more air.

That is why I was suggesting a needle wheel pump, possibly with an air pump added to the venturi so that you can inject more air to the needle wheel than it can physically draw by itself...the shear volume of the fine bubbles should also start pushing the skimmate to the collection cup as well...if I remember my physics class from high school anyway that is...
