Trigger with Swollen Eye - Popeye? HELP

I can't fugure out what happened.

My trigger is so happy all the time. Around two days his eye seemed swollen and it's only getting worse with time.

Do you think he may have PopEye?

Is PopEye contagious?

Could someone have just bit him?

What is the best way to treat this problem?

Yes, that's popeye. A single distended eye is usually nothing to get excited about. He probably just bumped it. Chances are it will clear up on its own in a week or so. If it doesn't, or if it gets worse, post again. Two eyes are a different story, BTW.

Both eyes mean the problem is much less likely to be the equivalent of a "black eye". First check for water quality... deteriorating conditions can cause this as well as a number of other symptoms such as fin rot. If that's it, improving the conditions should allow him to recover. If you think that's not the problem, I suggest isolating him and treating with an antibiotic such as a double dose of Maracyn-Two.

There's a chance he has a systemic disease that's not treatable, such as a fungus called Icthyophonus. If so, you'll see other symptoms such as sandpaper-like texure to the skin and/or curvature of the spine. Fish with this disease should be destroyed. This is usually introduced by feeding contaminated raw seafood.

Well - my trigger didn't make it!. I really believe I should have left him alone in the tank and he probably would have recovered on his own, but after the first day I took him out and put him in my hospital tank. He immediately stopped eating and starting acting bizzard. Twirling constantly and hiding. I thought I was doing something to help him, but I believe I totally tramatized him. On the third day he started coming to the top of the tank when I would come by and spitting water at me. Finally I had enough and put him back in the tank but he was never the same. It was as though he just gave up. It didn't show any other symptoms and I blame myself for jumping the gun. This was my favorite fish. His name was "Nigel"
