Red Macroalgae

I'm going to order the red algae sampler from gulf coast ecosystems. Im curious about the requirements and tolerance of them..

Are they hardy and do they generally ship well?

How much light/color temp do they like?

I will probably acclimate them in the fuge but I eventually want to put them in the display. I have MH lighting and Im worried they will get beaten down by too much light. I know Rhodophyta generally occur at deeper depths and probably prefer less intense light, but has anyone had success keeping them?

Judging from the photos and tanks hots I've seen the following short list of genera are pretty easy to keep in the red macroalgae: Gracilaria, Halymenia, Acanthophora, Rhodymenia, Botryocladia, Grateloupia, Scinaia.

If GCE's sampler includes a few of these it would be worth a shot to try in your tank. Shipping from FL to SC should be just fine, macro's seem to do better in cooler temperatures than warm.

Thanks Samala. The pack includes at least three varieties including Gracilaria, Botryocladia, Halymenia and Ochtodes. Ive never heard of Octodes, so I'm hoping they send me some and I can check it out. Ive heard a lot of cases where Rhodophyta thrives for a while then suddenly dies.. how common is this?

Far as I know Ochtodes is usually blue. Not sure if there are red species though.

I just received my shipment of Red Gracilaria from Gulf Coast Ecosystems. No complaints. Fast service. Packed very well for shipping. I read an article by Anthony Calfo, I found on "google"
that they are more demanding in regards to strong water flow and lighting. Anthony Calfo also stated it is a good marco algae for refuge.

FWIW... Ochtodes is a Rhodophyte (red algae), and the color varies depending on the depth in the ocean it was collected (or the intensity of light in captivity under which it was grown). An uncommon but lovely macroalgae indeed (not to be confused either with the similar looking but dreadfully invasive/nuisance Hypnea)
