Fish hatch from live rock
I have a friend who is setting up a new tank. The only thing in the tank for about 2 weeks has been live rock, until....now he's got about 30, 1/8 th inch long fish. All you can see are eyes, dorsal fins and tail. Now way at this point (at least for me) to tell what they are. Has anybody ever heard of fish eggs surviving on live rock and hatching?? Anybody want to guess what they are??

Could they be butt fish? (search the forums for "butt fish")
I don't see why not. I mean, if there are eggs in the rock, then they should be able to survive with just a bit of water on them. Also, in the new tank, I imagine they have no predators. V

That would be kinda neat to have baby fish hatch from live rock...You're not mistaking the fish hatch to be copepods..right?...Do they swim in a school?

They have eyes and dorsal fins....not like any copepod I've ever seen.

That's amazing! I wonder what they are eating?

He's put them in a bucket with some live rock, heater and air stone. Bought some cyclopeeze and pytoplankton to see if they would eat either.

Yeah, I was thinking mysis/mysid shrimp too...having just thawed a little snack for my corals.
In anycase, you know that you HAVE to post a picture of these things, right? V

Hopefully one or more will survive and grow so that we can get a picture. Then maybe someone can ID.
