Ray Charles' tips on Refractometer's use

I’m posting this only because no one on this board knows who I am. I recently purchased a refractometer and was very disappointed. The demarcation to read the salinity content was not a clean, sharp “line, but instead was very blurry, covering a wide range of values. You could have done better taste tasting the water. Well, I thought calibrating it might help when I noticed a protective plastic film covering the lens. Took the plastic off and guess what??? Maybe it’s time for a little corrective laser work on my lens.

Noticed on several occasions that my camerca works better with the lens cap off.
Stuff like that happens to everyone.

What kind of refractometer do you have? Is it all plastic or plastic and metal? Either of the two on the bottom?

I bought the "RAG special". Easy to use, easy to read Also, the refractometer reads about 0.001 lower than my "lab grade" floating hydrometer and about 0.003 higher than my "swinging arm" type.

I got mine from DIYREEF also, same one that BARE was supposed to get, its very good. Except I have to ignore the cleaning requirements. It takes 30 seconds to take the reading, but 5 minutes to clean up. I just give a lite rince and wipe dry.
