Ride along with the Dwarf Seahorse w/ pics

Hi all,

I just received my order of Dwarf Seahorse (HIPPOCAMPUS ZOSTERAE) From http://floridacollector.com/

They are currently housed in a JbJ 6gal the I have mod. Which is the simple removed the built-in filteration in the back. Im using a HoB Deco Art nano filter made by Red Sea which is good for up to 3 gallons with the flow turn to the lowest almost closed. I also cut a black form block(2x2x4) to mount at the intake so no seahorse would get sucked in.

The order was for 12 dwarves and I received 13 plus a baby. I think 2 or more are prego. Looks like one of the prego will be due at any day now.

They are being feed Artemia (baby brine shrimp) newly and older (2days +) that will be enrich with selcon.

Here is a few pics.
You can see how small they are in these view of the whole tank.

The largest one

Enjoy

I would say they are the easiest of all the seahorse to raise and care for. Seahorse require work so when I say easy its not a "set it, forget it" like some reef setup with CA reactor and timer. The babies and adults will eat the same thing and can be house in the same tank. They need to be feed often (one of the key factor here) the food need to be dense and you have to be willing to hatch Artemia/BBS almost daily. The setup is done with the mindset that I don't want to introduce any pest so that is why plastic plants are used. No RL or LS from reef tank were you might introduce critters that can string/hurt them.

Any water parameter differences compared to a reef? Are they only available in white/cream and that brownish color?

I keep them like I keep the reef and Im thinking I want to set them in line with my reef but I need to work out the detail of getting the water into their tank without adding any pest. was think about those tiny micro filter for collecting planton. and have a overflow with form around it to provent them from going into the sump. If you look closely they have color but they are kinda stress they were all white except that brownish one.

I don't really recommend anyone keeping seahorse if they are not up to the task of caring and researching for their care. I just wanted to share this project with the rest of you.
