Do you have any Maxi-jet powerheads laying around? If so, you could buy one of the mod kits (SureFlow, Gulf Stream II, EcoMod, etc.) and that would be perfect for mixing saltwater. LOTS of flow!

I use a Mag7 (converted from a Mag3) for mixing in a 44G Brute. After mixing, I use it to pump the water into the sump.

Not for mixing water , but for in tank use whick of the mod kits is best ?

Also usc-fan , i see where i think you posted on marinedepot that your eco mod shaft was rusting , is this still the case ?
P.S my sister and brother in law both went to usc , i wish i could have went too but had to go to tech college ...

Well instead of using the Ecomod for MJ400, can I just skip the need to mod and just go with a MJ1200?

I use a pump that is designed for a pond, much cheaper.

I second this...I use a mag 7 and it has the added benefit of heating the water perfectly overnight. Mags are great heaters and horrible pumps but perfectly designed for mixing saltwater.

How do you convert a mag4 into a mag7? Is there a kit for it as well?

Change the impeller and possibly the housing, the motor portion is the same.

LOL So true. You forgot to mention they are too noisy for use as a return pump. They make a good mixing pump, then you just slide a piece of 3/4" tubing over the outlet to transfer the SW to to sump.

Here is the conversion info:

Mag3 = 12575 impeller + 12535 pump cover
Mag5 = 12575 impeller + 12545 pump cover
Mag7 = 12585 impeller + 12545 pump cover

They did replace the shafts. I have not check again for rust since then.

Is rust bad? I have a small pump I want to use but it looks like there's a little bit of rust on the inside.
