I don't personally have a QT setup yet, but the LFS that I ultimately decided to trust my livestock purchases with does a QT of 2 weeks in water treated with copper combined with careful observation. It seems to be very successful for them and I have never had a problem.

I suppose the #1 priority when getting a new fish home is to minimize stress until they settle in.

I just keep it in QT for a couple of weeks, no copper or other medicin. The purpose of QT is to determine that the fish is healthy, it eats, and free of parasites. If you need to medicate a brand new fish, why not just take it back to the store and get a healthy fish? healthy fish don't need medicine.

but chances are the lfs hasnt had the fish long enough to determine if its parasite free or sick at all. and u cant always tell from looking.

Just observe the fish in QT for a month to ensure there are no health issues. If none are seen then you're good to go. If you do see signs of disease, etc. then the 1-month clock starts over after treatment from the day that the fish begins to look healthy again.

thats right. no medicine till you observe an illness, and then identify the illness. QT is just to watch, and we personally decide, based on our own experiences, if the fish looks "healthy" or not.

You could treat them with medicine as a precaution but you don't know what to give them until you see symptoms. Treating for the wrong thing could actually lengthen the QT period.

I also believe that treating fish with medicine can be somewhat stressful. Doing that without justification seems to be a little dangerous to me.

its your tank, you decide. I don't understand what is the point to give medicine when none is apparently needed, especially since most fish medicines are bogus, because, who of us is a marine biologist? even when giving fishes medicine, its all just a best guess effort
