covering them with a rock is not going to help. Been there, done that.

oh I know that it won't stop them, but at least it will give time for a clam to attach and then I'll just have a zoa encased maxima

IS your skimmer performance affected at all by the varying water height with the sirge? the skimmer will not be as effective as if it were in a constant height of water.

the foam should be covered in alges etc within 6 month , and no the skimmer is not affected , it is the new tunze master skimmers , completely automatic great bit of kit!

It is really cool to see how fish act in a tank that tall. Very nice!

The new Tunze seems to be working very well. It seems to produce no bubbles outside at all. I'm going to have to consider one when I upgrade to a larger tank.

You're going to have some heavy salt creep with that surge device. Are you doing anything to deal with this?

First let me say that the tank looks great and you have inspired my to build a taller tank. I have a question, I'm sorry if it has been answered already. I know that the foam is closed cell and won't absorb/leech once cured but what about if you cut it to shape? That exposes the inside of the foam...is that part still closed cell? My friend is a roofer and uses an almost identical foam for foam roofs and he said that if they have to cut a piece it has to be sealed with silicone or else it will absorb water .It seems to me that once cut the foam is no longer safe...please tell me I am wrong? I was planning of just sticking frags right into the foam.

i am sure it wont absorb water , even if cut , the inside is still closed , it is made up of thousands of tiny air bubble , so no i would say still safe ! here are some update pics

looks like you've got a decent slimealfea outbreak going there...new tanksyndrome, and stocking too much too fast are probably the culprits. Even using NSW, you still have to give time for all of the bacteria to populate the tank. I would imagine that with an almost entirely foam rock structure, that your tank will not be very stable in the long run cue to the lack of available surface area for bacteria to colonize. IMO you need more live rock in there to have a stable system.
