Importance of drip loops!
On Christmas day I filled my aquarium a little too full and forgot to adjust the flow into the sump to compensate. The ONLY cord that i hadn't made sure had a drip loop got wet. The result was a bright flash, burned wallpaper, a ruined extension cord and Coralife dual timer and a blown breaker. The reason the cord didn't have a loop was I had it hung away from the tank and there was only one way for it to get wet. I don't care if it is a one in a million shot make sure you have loops in all cords! I thought: Aw it can't happen unless this, this, and this has to happen for something to go wrong. Well I was wrong, lesson learned(the hard way).

I have drip loops in all my cords for that reason. Good thing the damage stopped where it did and you caught it. Son had a cheap power strip go up and burn his brand new carpet and luckily I was home and saw the smoke
It really makes you look at all aspects of how electricity is being used and protected or not in your tank. Sorry to hear about your mishap

I was lucky. All I lost was a powerstrip and an extension cord. Scared the crap out of my wife and daughter though. It was one of those things. I had to do without my halides for a few days but my T-5's kept everything going. I tell you what though, you miss those timers. I had to get up a least twice in the middle of the night and go turn them off because i forgot.
