Fuge=Pods in tank?

i have a 120g reef tank, with a CRP medium (3g) hang on fuge. there are tons of critters in the fuge, but i am a little confused about how they get into the main tank and become fish food. i know that they flow in with the water that is going back in, but all the critters i see are in the weeds and rock, they are not floating around to be carried into the tank...

If you look at night with a flashlight, you will see them on the walls. Shine the light through the side of the tank and look at the front, you will see the little white spots all over the place. They will crawl through the outflow and into the main tank.

There are things that can reduce or elliminate the amount thats transferred over , like filter socks and to much media. Adding some LR and rubble rock also heslp. I shake my cheato in the main tank after i trim back to help. But the return pump will blow in eggs and to small to really see pods over to the main. You dont need a fuge for pods. But if you have a dragon then its a nessesity for pod population.

Like Sooner said, they do make their way to the main tank and in great numbers. Some think they would get chopped up and killed by the impeller of the return pump but they are too small for that.

Just a month ago I had a 1.5in. long Diamond Goby make his way down the overflow, over the bubble wall and into the return area of the sump where he stayed for 2 days and then a few days later, I spotted him back up in the main tank. If a small Goby can go through a Mag12 pump then surely a copepod can as well.

I would do atleast a 10 gallon fuge if I was going to have them both in there. The Mandarin eats like crazy if you can get one that eats.

Get rid of the 6-line. It is a main competitor of pods with a mandarin and the mandarin needs all of them. Most 6-lines will eat prepared foods where most Mandarins will not but even when the 6-line eats prepared food, he still consumes pods that the mandarin needs.

In a 125 gallon with enough LR and 20 gallon fuge thats been running a few months then you should be fine.

Better yet, here is the article from melevs' site. I feed mine brine and mysis, though brine is 'his' preferred food. do not be discouraged if your fish does not go in at first--keep trying. try placing it near his favorite hang-outs. you can also glue an acrylic rod the end of the jar so that you don't have to even get your hands wet.
