Tank of the month

The Tanks Of The Month are exquisite! They give this newbie something to strive for in years to come. To that end, would it be possible that show a tank of the month that's developed by a mere mortal? Not a professional with a $50-60k set up who affords the $800-$1000/month electric bill? I am quite sure that I'm not the only one who'd like to see a really grand 55- or 120-gallon set up. We all know these aren't cheap to set up, but at least it's also a little more real-world and you needn't be an anesthesiologist or a Beverly Hills divorce attorney to do the grand setups that seem to be overwhelmingly chosen.

Thanks,
Dave Claghorn

both sides

It’s funny that you bring up this subject because I was just talking about the same thing... why all the tank of the months 50k setups is. I agree that these huge setups are really getting all the attention with the exception of some. Some times I feel like I’m competing against Sheds or Atlanta Aquarium.

Do I think that they deserve the spot light? Well, it’s better than my tank by a long shot. To play devils advocate with my own thoughts and feelings... if my tank is better than his, then I wouldn’t be growing beautiful red algae and my corals would be so vibrant with color that they would glow in the dark.

Does this hobby cost money, hell yeah. Is it the only factor, no!
Believe me, I know what you are saying and I feel like that to. Kinna wish their was a major and minor league tank of the month.
But when I look at a "tank of the month" or anybody’s tank, I don’t look just look at the corals, I look at the whole picture. Their setup, rock structure, plumbing, electrical, etc... I look at how clean of a wiring and plumbing job they did, their creativity with rock structure and stand design.

I have to keep telling myself that it is more than just money that makes a tank beautiful, it takes time, patients and love. Large setup cost alot, but it also cost alot to operate. I have a small setup so my operational cost is smaller. When I look at it from this perspective, I figure that the playing field is the same so what makes their tank better than mine. Well, in my case it the patches of red algae. When will my tank be in the spot light? I'm guessing when the fish leave their ocean to come live in my little one.

I’m sure your tank is nice, but is there anything you can do to make it stand out? Remember that the tank of the month is nothing more than examples on how to do something, only difference is that it’s someone else's tank this month.

For the RC Editor who replied with six example of smaller setups... I think that people who think and feel like this need something more like an explanation then links and a "perhaps you missed these!" statement.

All of those tanks are examples of the kind of tank he was looking for in TOTM as he described below:

My favorite also. Could be mine...

I've never looked at the TOTM's as a contest, more of an honor. I don't strive to have that, but I am in awe of the ones that have been chosen. The things that are possible is overwhelming to me.
