Cyano question

Hey everyone,

I'm aware that cyano is a normal cycle in a new tank. My tank has been running for 3 mos now and I still have it. At what point, typically does this stop? I know it's going to be different for everyone's tank, but I was just hoping for an approximation.

I'm starting to wonder if I'm having a problem, or if at 3 mos, I should still be having the problem.

Thanks in advance.

To start your stocking way to fast. It just cycled weeks ago. Then i see no proper flow listed. The faster you increase the bio load the harder for the tank to re adjust. Typical newbie mistake. Your rushing and need to slow down.
Also nice stock list but i would rather see your tank readings .Ammonia , nitrate , phosphate , Ph,ect..

I think this small problem will become a major headache if you dont act fast.

Hey Lance,

Thanks for the imput. My flow is listed under my current tanks. Maybe I listed it wrong? It's 716.

As for stocking, I've been stocking approximately one thing per week or so. When I asked at my LFS, they stated that the corals wouldn't affect my bio load. Is this incorrect??

My current readings, as of today are:
PH 8.2
Amonia 0
Nitrites 0
Nitrates 20
Salt 1.023
Phosphate 0 (using API test kit)
Calcium 380. Usually reads between 380 - 420. I dont dose it.

My cyano outbreak showed up at about 3 months too. I pointed a powerhead at the spot and it went away...until I put a light in my sump for the chaeto. Now my sump has cyano but it hasn't spread back into the main tank.

Lookin at my post, I should edit, There isn't cyano in the tank, only in the sump. The flow created by the powerhead got rid of the dead spot in my tank that allowed the cyano to grow.

Dont understand 716 for flow? And yes coral excrete waste and need food so both add to the load. LFS just wants your money.Though it maybe lower then a fish. But you add then check and if at anytime readings rise and regular water changes dont fix then stop and contoll the current issue.

Here is a great cyno article and no question is a bad question.

Thanks duffman, maybe I"m on schedule then?

Lance - maybe I don't understand flow correctly then? I have the biocube, which states that the flow is 400 something. I then added one Koralia1. I just added the gallons per hour of each to come up with my total flow? I have both power heads, one at each back corner of the tank pointing diagonally towards the opposite end of the tank and towards the top. When I adjust the "flow" or direction of either of these, it always blows my sand away from the glass, so I pointed them upwards for fear of disturbing my sandbed too much.

This is a 29 gallon bio cube? If so then what size koralia? If its a #1 or even 2 then your lacking. Cyno doesnt grow well with the proper flow. But its also water source , rock palcement , stock and amount fead , and uncleaned media. Also see bio balls , they are great nitrate collectors. Aswell as water change amount and scedule. I dought theres 1 reason only for this issue.

Yes, it's a biocube 29. One of my power heads is the return from my sump, the other is a koralia1.

My water change scedule is once per week. I change 5 gallons, which is about 20% per week.

I guess I'll try removing the bio balls and placing some LR in there. I'm beginning to think the thought process is I'm too far in the wrong direction and completely messed up now.

Thank you very much for your time and patience with this!

MB 1 more koralia as the hot spot is behind the rockwork where flow is low or worse. This is where uneatin food , waste , and other debris collects and after time , Months or yrs , will cause your problems.
