Can fish choke on food?

I posted this question on the Fish Disease forum... but there isn't anybody there. Seems like everybody is in the lounge.

Does anybody know if fish can choke on food? I think my fish is choking. Not sure what to do...

Please don't send me to my room for posting this in the lounge...

Food could get caught in its throat but since fish don’t have lungs it can’t actually choke. what makes you think it has a problem.

Thanks for responding.

It was during feeding time. Flamehawk ate some flake food. Then I added a bit of mysis shrimp and prawn. Thats when I noticed that Flamehawk went hiding... AND every now and again Flamehawk stretches its mouth (sort of) wide open.

This fish really gets excited about feeding time and does eat alot. But not during this feeding. It wouldn't come out of hiding.

Yeah, you try and catch it and tell it it's okay, your just trying to help.
Usually if something gets stuck, they can 'cough' it up. But there are those times where a large fish can swallow or try to swallow something and it gets stuck. Especially catfish.

Having a reef tank makes that catching part quite tricky.

Maybe it can read lips... I've been telling Flamehawk to cough...
I don't think it can hear me though...

But maybe my question or my concern about my fish is boring....

LOL, there are actually people in here that don't have fish.

I have no idea what could be wrong with your fish, but I doubt it has anything to do with choking.

OOPS... my mistake then. I thought people come to a reef/fish site because they actually have fish. *shrugs*

Yes, since they don't have lungs... I would gather its definitely NOT choking.

I suppose a better way to phrase my question was to ask.. IF food could get stuck in the fish's mouth?

i think fish can choke on food, just like how they can drown in water, its possible!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I think it may be possible, in some manner. I've scared a fish that overloaded his mouth and it spit it out. Try that next time. Hope its okay!

Poor fish... laying at the bottom of my tank (in the same place since yesterday)... won't eat any food offered.
