Cool Hyposalinity beats Ich!!!

Hello to all. 5 weeks ago I posted here about whether my hippo tang had ich or not and we determined that she not only had ich, but black ich also and treatment was necessary ASAP.

Hyposalinity was the preferred treatment, so...

I fixed up the 5 gal hex hospital tank and put the hippo and the 2 black ocillaris in it with a pvc pipe for hiding and a sacrificial piece of live rock for water conditioning, dropped the salinity to 1.09, bought a refractometer from the lfs to maintain water parameters and... voila!

5 weeks later I moved them all back to their home tank, ich free and happy! The invertebrates from the main tank were fine and the fish are better than ever!

Thanks to all who have helped me determine the sickness and taught me how to treat ich successfully.

That's great!
I battled ich in the same situation as you with hypo. It is marvellous to see the fish happy and not scratching themselves anymore.

Great news Diane!

It is also good to hear that hyposalinity helps with black "Ich", too.

Well, that makes me feel better.

I'm currently doing hyposalinity because I have a singapore angel and convict tang with ich.

I just got down to 1.009 and the fish seem to be less stressed.

However, I just noticed the tang's eye seems to be bulging a bit.

I'm guessing he must have injured it scratching. I'm assuming that it may improve with the hyposalinity.

Please tell me how long it took before your fish started to "feel better."

I know I need to keep this up for 4-6 weeks but was wondering if they will start to immediately feel better.

Any advice about the eye?

The fish are likely to be in distress until the parasites drop off which is 3 to 7 days after they attached. If you are already at 1.009 when they drop off, the fish should stay well for the whole term of the hyposalinity.

Well, I will hold my breath and be patient. I'll keep you updated. I just can't believe the eye of the tang. Everytime I walk by the tank the eye looks bigger.

Maybe I should stop looking

Can you imagine if that happened to our eyes when we got a cold? Creepy...
